Dorothy Newcomer Obituary

Dorothy Laura Newcomer
Born: August 29, 1920 in Limerick, IL
Died: March 11, 2024 in Dixon, IL
Dorothy Laura Newcomer, 103, of Dixon, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2024, at Katherine Shaw Bethea Hospital, in Dixon, IL.
Dorothy was born on August 29, 1920, in Limerick, IL (a wide spot in the road just South of Kasbeer, IL), the second child of Charles and Gladys (Shaw) Sargent. She was raised on the family farm and later graduated from Princeton High School in 1938. While working in a brassiere factory in Princeton, IL, she went on a blind double date. In the middle of the date, she switched partners and met Murray E. Newcomer, of Woosung, IL, whom she married on April 9, 1939. After their marriage, the couple settled in Dixon, IL. Dorothy and Murray had three sons and while the children were young, she was the homemaker. Later she worked for various companies including Lawton Brothers' Dairy, Harrison's Chevrolet Cadillac, First Federal Savings and Loan, and as a real estate broker. She also helped out at the family-owned Pinecrest Cheese and Gift Shop. She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and a founding member of the Rock River Grange. Dorothy enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and collecting antiques; but her real passion was playing bridge, and was known to be able to recall hands that were played long ago, especially the ones she won. Being a people person, she was always there to help people in need.
Survivors include two sons, Larry E. Newcomer, James W. (Jean) Newcomer; three grandchildren, Laura (Barry) Sutton, Randall Newcomer, Raymond (Georgia) Newcomer; six great-grandchildren, Kristofer and Kyle Newcomer, Brock and Gillian Sutton, Zachary and Alexia Newcomer; a great-great-granddaughter, Aurora Newcomer; and daughters-in-law, Ruth Newcomer and Dianna Newcomer.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Murray E. Newcomer; a young son, William Allen; an older brother, John Sargent, of Florissant, MO; and a younger sister, Ruby Shore, of Aurora, IL.
A Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the time of the Funeral Service at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at Grace United Methodist Church, in Dixon, with Rev. Rosa Lee, officiating. Burial will be to follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, in Dixon.
