John W. Cramer age 104 of Dixon passed away on July 18, 2024 at Heritage Square in Dixon. He was born on June 8, 1920 in Dixon, IL the son of Raymond and Rebecca (Levan) Cramer. John worked for the Freeman Shoe Co. for 25 years and while working at the Shoe Co. served in the Army during WWII from 1944 to 1946. While in the Army he did his basic training at Camp Walters Texas, and was assigned to the 383 Regiment, 96 Division. John was sent to the Pacific. He was involved in the invations of Okinawa in April and Saipan in June of 1945. John received his Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster and V device, Presidential Unit Citation, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Badge, and WWII Victory and Good Conduct Medals. He also worked for Marshall Beauty Supply for 41 1/2 years before retiring at age 85. John was a member of the 1st United Methodist Church in Dixon, the American Legion, Amvets Club, Kiwanis Club of Dixon, Elks Lodge of Dixon, the treasurer of the Palmyra Cemetery Association, and was active in the Sugar Grove church and School Restoration.
John was one of the friendliest men you would ever meet. He lived 104 healthy years until just recently. John gave up his driver's license at age 102.
He married Elaine Mueller on Aug. 16, 1941 in Dixon, IL. John is preceded in death by his parents, wife Elaine that passed on Feb. 23, 2023 and one brother Dr. Dale Cramer. He is survived by his son John (Linda) Cramer Jr of Herrin, IL, daughter Sue Rocheleau of Chicago, sister in law Jeana Cramer of Tuscaloosa AL, one grandson John W. Cramer III, two step grandchildren Anthony Huffstutter, Michel (Shane) Clark, four step great grandchildren Jessica, Makayla, Adam, Darien, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be on Wednesday July 24, 2024 at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Dixon. Burial will follow at Palmyra Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be on Tuesday July 23, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Jones Funeral Home in Dixon.
