Lucy Eilert Obituary

Lucy 'Cookie' Roe Eilert
Died: December 2, 2021
Lucy "Cookie" Roe Eilert, beloved Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, Great Aunt and friend, died on December 2, 2021. She was 91.
Cookie was born in Ossining, New York in 1930, and was raised in Grand Detour, IL. Cookie attended high school at Emma Willard School, in Troy, New York. Upon graduating from Emma Willard, she completed her studies at Radcliffe College and Simmons Nursing School.
Cookie had a long and varied nursing career, spanning nearly fifty years! She worked in New York City; California; Illinois; and several locations in the greater Boston area. Her early career was as a surgical nurse. She eventually moved to psychiatric nursing, where she spent the majority of her career. Her compassion coupled with her no-nonsense approach allowed her to provide help to innumerable patients throughout her long career.
Cookie was married twice, and loved by all who knew her, especially her three daughters, Lesley Wood Underdown, Heather Wood Grillo, and Katherine Roe Eilert; her two grandchildren, Emma and Sam Grillo; her nephews, John Hoopes Roe (Katherine Borchert Roe) Paul Durkes Roe (Lynn Atkinson Roe) and Amos Burritt Roe (deceased) (Cherity Foat) and Grand Nieces and Nephews, Ian, Elliot, Evan, Lydia, Sophie and Ethan. Cookie especially enjoyed big gatherings on Nantucket, with friends and family all packed into the family home. She loved all card games especially the family card game "Pounce." Cookie was known for her sharp wit and sharper mind, even as she aged.
In her mid 80's Cookie moved to California to be near her grandchildren. She was able to get back to Nantucket for most summers, until very recently.
A celebration of life will be held this summer on Nantucket.

I am very saddened to hear of Lucy's passing.
I first met Lucy a few years ago, at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, CA, where we were both enrolled in a physical therapy program for patients with Peripheral Arterial Disease. We would pick treadmills next to each other and have extremely entertaining conversations, with lots of jokes and laughter! I learned of her life back East, in locales I was familiar with as a child - Boston area, and Nantucket. I will miss her easy wit and contagious laugh.
After the therapy program ended, we communicated less and less - but Lucy has touched my life, and I will remember her fondly.
My sincere condolences to your families.
