Neil Coffey Obituary

Neil Robert Coffey
Born: June 22, 1939
Died: March 23, 2025
Neil Robert Coffey was born on June 22, 1939, in Dixon, Illinois, and passed away on March 23, 2025, surrounded by his family.
He was 1 of 13 siblings born to Gene and Helen Coffey. At the young age of 18, Neil eloped with his high school sweetheart, Ellen Price, who was just 15. They began their family shortly thereafter and had 5 kids. They moved away from Illinois after just a few years of being married and ended up moving to Goleta, California.
Neil began his career as a butcher ,and worked at many grocery stores and meat markets throughout Santa Barbara and Goleta. Neil was able to retire at the age of just 55. His favorite past time was the nickel keno machines at the Chumash Casino, which he enjoyed even up to the last week of his life. He loved to plant flowers in his garden as well. Sadly, he lost his wife Ellen when he was just 65, at just shy of 50 years of marriage. Shortly after that was when he went back in time and met back up with his 8th grade sweetheart, Kay Sholders. The 2 of them began taking cruises all over the world and shared the past 19 years together. They also spent a lot of time visiting friends and family and watching their grandkids play sports, music and academic achievements. Neil was also very fond of parades. Neil will definitely be remembered for his sense of humor. It was like no other. He often times was a practical joker and made many people laugh. Many people will remember his high pitched whistle whether he used it to call his kids home or to cheer on one of his grandkids at their games. He was the best cheerleader!
He is survived by his 4 children, Donna Demeter, (Dave), Jack Coffey (Amalia), Joe Coffey (Amy) and Diana Burnham (Larry); his grandchildren, Joe Starbuck, Josh Pearl, Luke Coffey, Isaac Coffey, Dustin Demeter, Davey Demeter, Nova Burnham, Zachary Burnham and Ashlie Burnham; his brothers Paul Coffey and Terry Coffey; and his girlfriend, Kay Sholders.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Coffey; his daughter, Deborah Coffey-Starbuck; and his parents.
Viewing was held at Welch-Ryce-Haider Funeral Home, located at 450 Ward Dr., Santa Barbara, Ca, on Saturday, March 29th.
A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, April 14th at 11am at St. Mark's Church in Isla Vista, California, immediately followed by a celebration of life at Neil's home.

When I was little Go Fish was my favorite. Every time I was asked to draw a card by him he´d say "Go play on the freeway" and we always knew he was kidding. It hurts now knowing a game of Go Fish won´t be the same. And for that I thank him for being the one to show me fun games. Keep us all safe including grandma Kay from heaven and paint the night sky beautiful. Love, Hannah

Rest easy, Neil! I will miss coming over and always having a pot of coffee waiting and sometimes donuts! Play lots of cards, dice, and dominoes up there! Love, Mandi

They say a father is a girls first best friend well yes that´s true, my Grandpa Neil was my ultimate first best friend. From playing card games at the table with cups of coffee, to scaring me with a rubber old man mask the stories are endless. But my personal favorite is how many card games he taught me.
