AMBOY - Sonja (Prew) Jenkins, age 65, of Amboy, Illinois, passed away on August 12, 2022 at Serenity Hospice and Home in Oregon, Illinois. Sonja was born on September 21, 1956 in Sterling, Illinois, the daughter of Lee and Irene (Drane) Prew. Sonja created a life with her partner, Marty Spears and her dog Paulie, and enjoyed their many years together. In her younger years she worked at Walgreens and then became a stay at home Mom to her daughter, Tara. When she re-entered the workforce, Sonja worked at Sterling Daily Gazette and worked at Borg Warner for several years before her health started to decline.
Sonja loved crocheting, playing games on her tablet, traveling, spending time with her daughter, Tara and taking care of her grandchildren, whom she was very dedicated to. She loved to live in her home out in the country and watch the wildlife.
She is survived by her daughter Tara (Josh) Geerts; her partner Marty Spears; three grandchildren, Kylor, Kinzie, and Haleigh; one great grandchild, Paetyn; two sisters, Sherry (Bob) Kennard, and Sheila (Gil) Sobremonte; and several aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Sonja is preceded in death by her parents, and her nephew, Shane. Cremation rites have been accorded. A gathering of family and friends will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at New Life Lutheran Church in Sterling. Memorial Service will follow at 11:00am, with Pastor Phil Gronbach officiating. Interment will conclude at Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling.
A memorial has been established for Happy Tails Humane Society in Rock Falls, Illinois and Serenity Hospice and Home in Oregon, Illinois. Cards may be sent to McDonald Funeral home.
