Allison Sharpe Obituary

Allison R. Al Sharpe - SAVANNAH - Allison R. Al Sharpe passed away peacefully, on Thursday, November 30, 2016, at Candler Hospital, after a brief illness. He was 93. Al was born in Wayne County, Georgia, on November 1, 1923. He graduated from Wayne County High School in 1941, and in 1942, he joined the US Army Air Corps, where he served for two years in Italy during WWII, as an airplane mechanic. After the war, he settled in Savannah, where he met Mary Futral, and they married in 1948. During his long and active life in Savannah, Al established an auto-parts business, which became known to mechanics and individuals all over town as the place to shop for auto and marine parts. Al became a Master Mason (Acacia Lodge, #452) in 1958, and in 1972, went on to walk the burning sands as a Shriner, serving for many years in the Clown Unit and later the Greeter Unit of Alee Temple--dedicated to raising funds to support Shriner's Hospitals. Another civic passion for Al was the Exchange Club of Chatham County, and later the Exchange Club of Savannah. Al received his 50-year membership award last year, from the Savannah Exchange Club. During those 50 years, he served in many capacities to help raise funds for needy children. He loved helping others through charitable work, especially if there was a party, festival, dance or cook-out involved! Those who knew him remember his passion for boating and fishing. He also loved to bring home his catch and fry them with hushpuppies for supper. He kept a beautiful yard, and loved to mow and trim to perfection. He was on his lawn tractor, mowing the grass, just a few weeks before he passed away! Al was predeceased by his parents, Mary Morgan Sharpe and Abram R. Sharpe; his wife of 64 years, Mary Futral Sharpe; and two sisters, Elsie Sharpe Truett, and Mary Sharpe Banister. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Charles Whitfield of Savannah. Also, one brother, Wyman H. Sharpe of Savannah, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was a communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church, Savannah, GA. Remembrances may be sent to The Morris Slotin Fund, Alee Temple, 100 Eisenberg Drive, Savannah, GA 31406; or St. John's Episcopal Church, 2 East Macon St., Savannah, GA 31401 Visitation will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at Fox & Weeks, Islands Chapel. Graveside service will follow at 11:00 a.m., December 6, 2016 at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. Savannah Morning News December 5, 2016 Please sign our Obituary Guest Book at savannahnow.com/obituaries.

I worked for Al at Auto Parts & Service on Montgomery Cross Roads in the early '70s. A good man. Have a lot of fond memories working for him. A couple years after I worked for him, I found myself in need of a job while waiting to transfer from Armstrong to Georgia Southern. Went to see Al. He didn't have anything but right away he picked up the phone and lined me up with Arden Hadwin. I went to work at Globe Auto Parts the next day. I was very fortunate to know Al.

He was one of the kindest, people I knew. My best memories of him is when he ran the Parts Shop on Montgomery Crossroads. Jimmy Lair,my Daddy, ran a small Auto Repair shop, and Al's shop was the 'to go to place' for auto parts, and to see people who hung around, just to talk and visit. Al was that kind of person,he loved having people around. He will be greatly missed, but he sure left a lot of good memories for us all. To his family,I will tell you,he left you all with enough LOVE to last you a lifetime. With God's Love, and ours,The Lair Family
