My first mental picture of Arnie was as a thin 20-something guy sitting on the kitchen stool in our home on Clifton Road, chatting with me while I helped fix dinner. I'm guessing I was around 12. His conversation was very animated, but at this point I have no idea what the topic was.
Most of my memories of Arnie involve communication: He and my father (and later, my mother) had many long phone conversations lasting late into the evening;
He wrote letters to many members of the family --always in his tiny handwriting, and usually on notebook paper;
and he was interested and involved in conversations whenever he visited my home or attended any of our family get-togethers.
He liked being around people. He attended my family's weddings and Christmases and sent gifts. He was appreciative of every card and photo I sent, and frequently reminded me that he put them all up on a bulletin board he had.
It is perhaps surprising that Arnie became as much a member of the family as he did, considering that he was only one of many, many connections that my father made from teaching mathematics at Georgia State. Whatever the reason, though, the strands of Arnie's life and my family's life have been inextricably woven together. We considered him an honorary member of our family. We will always remember Arnie.
