Charles Parkinson Obituary

Charles D. Parkinson - SAVANNAH - Charles D. Parkinson, 77, died September 9, 2014 after a short illness. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and has lived in Savannah since 1982. He was a graduate of The Ohio State University and obtained his Graduate Degree in Business Administration from the University of Missouri in Kansas City. He was retired from the Georgia Ports Authority where he served 18 years as Vice President of Finance. Prior to GPA, he was employed by several Fortune 500 companies. From 1959 through 1962 he served in the United States Army and was stationed in Europe at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Southern Germany. He also held temporary assignments in Orleans and Paris France, and Berlin, Germany. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Savannah, and was active in several of the church's outreach programs including the volunteer chaplain group that ministered to inmates of the Chatham County Detention Center. He was a member of the West Chatham Exchange for over 20 years and served as club president in 1986. He received the club's Book of Golden Deeds award for public service. He was preceded in death by his parents, James F. Parkinson Sr. and Winifred Tillet Parkinson and by an older brother, Thomas Tillet Parkinson. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Alta Messersmith Parkinson; a son and daughter-in-law, Christopher David Parkinson and Teresa Grace Parkinson and their sons Gerald Christopher, Charles Daniel and Jackson David of Atlanta, GA; a daughter and son-in-law, Anne-Liesse Hillary Ankeny and Gerald Howard Ankeny and their daughter Sarrah Elisabeth of Huntersville, NC; and a daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly Kay Brantley and Jeffrey Lon Brantley and their children Mary Kathryn Lanier Brantley of Guyton, GA, Jessica Nicole Heilman Whitehead and husband Dexter of Savannah and Joseph Zachary Heilman of Savannah; a brother James F. Parkinson, Jr. and wife Lois of Buffalo, New York; and a sister-in-law Jane Parkinson of Sanford, NC. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm today, September 10 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, September 11, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church.
