Demetrios Miltiades Obituary

Demetrios Xenophon "Mitchell" Miltiades, 85, of Savannah, died Saturday, July 9, 2005, under the care of Hospice Savannah, surrounded by his family. He was born in Savannah, Georgia, on May 4th, 1920. Mr. Miltiades attended Commercial High School and graduated from Carlisle Military School in May 1943. He was also the captain of the Carlisle Basketball Team. He was a World War II Veteran. He served in the United States Army 29th Infantry Division and was one of thousands who landed on the Northern Coast of France on D-Day. His military service encompassed Northern France, Ardennes and the Rhineland. He was awarded a Purple Heart after being wounded by shrapnel in Germany. He also received the World War II Victory Medal and a Bronze Star Medal along with many others. He was self-employed and owned the Victory Soda Shop on Waters Ave and later Michell's Grocery store at 2214 Augusta Ave. He was a life long member of St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church and a member of the Sons of Pericles. He was also a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 596, Post #8 DAV as well as a member of the Old Timers Softball Club. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Irene Constantine Miltiades; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Dimitri and Robin Miltiades, Lear and Michelle Miltiades of Savannah and Ted Miltades of Atlanta and three grandchildren, Dimitri, Christy and Mitchell Miltiades and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church with Fr. Vasile Mihai and Fr. John Caparisos officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Abbey Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be: Alexander Miltiades Nick Lambros, George Lambros Michael Pahno, Jimmy Cotoulas and Ricky Constantine. Honorary pallbearers will be: Dr. Manuel Tissura I. Pano Karatassos, Dr. Pete Bougas, Charles T. Masterpolis, James Mataxas, Dennis Mataxas, Arthur Stelianos, Alex Carellas and Dr. Pete Bougas Jr. A Memorial Coffee Hour will be held immediately after the interment service, in the Hellenic Center of St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church.
