Frederick A.D. Sullivan, Sr., 62, died Friday, May 6, 2005 at Hospice Savannah, surrounded by his five children. Fred was born in Savannah, Georgia January 14, 1943 to Allison Davis Sullivan and the late John A. Sullivan. He attended the Chatham County Schools, and graduated from HV Jenkins High School in 1962, where he was an outstanding football and track star during his high school years. He won the state track meet and set city records in the javelin and the 220 yard dash that may still stand, going on to win both events at the state meet. That same year, he was all city, all state, and all American in football as well. He earned an associates degree in business from Brunswick Junior College, summa cum laude, and attended Armstrong State College, working towards his bachelors. In 1963, he pursued boxing as a career. Fred began a career in Insurance in 1974, first attaining LUTCF and CLU designations, and then teaching the classes. When Life Insurance of Georgia was bought out, he established Sullivan Insurance Agency, which he operated as sole proprietor until his death. He was credited with starting an outreach program at the YMCA for inner city kids, driving a bus to pick up and bring them back to participate in sports. He was my grandpa. I really never got to meet him. All the stories that my dad has told me about him was magnificent. He was born 4 days before me. That made me really happy. If he were alive right now i bet we would have had a special bond. I love boxing myself. I get my athleticism from him. But, even if i didn't get to meet him. I'm happy that he is in a better place, a better world. I know he's looking down on all of us. Even my dad.

I'm sadden beyond belief.I can't believe you won't be giving me a hard time anymore. Love you Fred and miss you more than you know.

To the family of Fred Sullivan: Just this day,5/17/05 received a call from my brother in Savannah about the death of Fred. You might have heard Fred mention me...several years ago. Fred and I went to Las Vegas, NV. back in 1966 (I think). Anyway, Fred and I use to hang out a lot prior to going to LV. He left me out there and he returned to Savannah. We use to visit the old Bamboo Ranch in Savannah a lot back in the 60's. What a heck of a fighter! I remember we were out one night and a bigger guy started picking on me. Fred wouldn't have that so the guy said something to him and Fred "knocked him out" right there in the parking lot. Fred & Ike shared some wonderful memories back in the 60's. I haven't seen or heard from Fred in over 35 years, but my brother dealt with him in the insurance business. He told me that Fred use to really talk about the days that he & I spent together. That made me feel good that he remembered. He was my 60's hero.I know he will be missed by a lot of friends, of which he had many. He was probably the most popular person in Savannah during his boxing days. Everybody knew Fred Sullivan. To his children, you can be very proud of your Daddy. To his mother, I KNOW this is the most tragic thing to ever happen in your life. To have a child proceed you in life ain't right. I know, because I have been there, except my son was only 22. May God be with all of the family members.

Fred and I were kinda like sparring partners when it came to the insurance business. I never knew by talking with him on the phone with the long conversations we had, that he was such a giving man. He had so much going for him. I will miss Fred very much...

Best wishes and my condolences go to his family.....

Rest in peace my friend!

I met Fred for the first time at my age of 15 in the boxing gym in Savannah. From that day on Fred became a friend and someone that I could turn to for help in and out of the boxing ring. I think of Fred often he was always happy with a good attitude and fun to be around. My prayers go out for his family

Hello Virginia,

My sincere condolences to you and your family.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Fred's passing. Jimmy Bullock and I were frequently in the gym during his boxing workouts. Occasionally he would "coerce" me into holding the medicine ball while he punched it. To this very day I still tell the story about his incredible punching power. When he punched that medicine ball, both the medicine ball AND I were literally lifted several inches in the air. Had he hit me with the same force, I would not be here today to write this condolence. Although he could always "take anybody in the room" he was always friendly and respectful. Although he would probably not remember me, I always considered him to be my friend. What a great loss. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
