Gale Nichols Obituary

Gale Manning Nichols - SAVANNAH - Gale Manning Nichols, 68, passed away on July 2nd, 2011, of cancer. She died at home surrounded by her family. She was born January 11, 1943, in New York City and grew up in Jackson Heights, Queens. She graduated from New Lincoln High School in Manhattan and attended the Women's College of the University of North Carolina. She left college to pursue a successful modeling career in New York City with the Sixties East Agency. She was a runner up in the Miss Rheingold contest and did numerous beauty commercials including Clairol and Ivory. Later she joined the Ford and Elite agencies as a booking agent. Her greatest joys in life were spending time with her daughter and grandson and traveling with her husband. As well as her passion for traveling the world and experiencing different cultures, Gale enjoyed cooking, playing bridge, decorating and had a zest for all things fashion. Gale will be remembered for her colorful personality, enthusiasm for life and her kindness and generosity of spirit. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Peter S. Crawford. She is survived by her husband of eight years, Dave Nichols, her daughter, Chatham Crawford, her grandson, Cooper Schwanebeck, her step-mother, Francie Manning, her half-sister, Brook Manning, her half-brother, Colin Manning, her four step-children and three grandchildren from her marriage to Peter Crawford and her four step-children and six grandchildren from her marriage to Dave Nichols. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 9th, at Unity of Savannah Church, 2320 Sunset Blvd., Savannah, GA 31404. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Savannah ( www.hospicesavannah.org) . I have known Chatham and Gale since Chatham and I were about 10 years old. She was like a second mom to me growing up , and we have gone through a lot together. Gale will be terribly missed by me and my family. She has been my stepmother since 1980. She was always so full of life and happiness and made everyone around her feel loved. Thank you to everyone for all your heartfelt memories and sympathy.
