Herbert Traub Obituary

Herbert S. Traub, Jr. August 31, 1917 - March 20, 2008 - SAVANNAH - Herbert Smith Traub, Jr., whose cheerful demeanor and generous spirit endeared him to generations of Savannahians and enticed legions of tourists to love his home town, died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday at 90 years of age after a bout with leukemia that lasted only one week. Traub's philosophy approaching old age was, "I'd rather wear out than rust out." His night out on the town just last week at a Mannheim Steamroller concert proved the point. Until the final illness forced him out, Traub slept in the bed where he was born at the house built that same year, 1917. Although deeply rooted in Savannah, he was not root bound. His zany marketing chutzpah enticed a wide American and international public into his flagship business, the Pirates' House Restaurant. His fantasies spoke to the masses and through him their childhood dreams came true: "pirate-sized" portions and "huge, luscious desserts" served up in a rabbit warren of 23 dining rooms complete with thunder and lightening in a "Rain Forest Bar." Traub's sense of style held his exuberance in check and secured the remarkable success of his endeavors. Under Traub's leadership, the Pirates' House was noted as one of America's 50 most successful restaurants. His drive for "better and more" led to illuminated monuments in Savannah's downtown squares, fountains jetting high in the air over Daffin Park, and the glittering restoration of the Lucas Theater, just three of many Traub-sized projects he helped to completion throughout his long life. Public platforms for this leadership included, in earlier years, the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and later the Rotary Club. Savannahians who dealt with this master of grand public gestures in his personal life got the same treatment, just on more intimate terms. Friends knew to expect pots of flowers or boxes of Benne Wafers when the occasion warranted and sometimes when it didn't. He insinuated himself into the lives of his bank tellers, pharmacy clerks, florists, and doctors' nurses with humor and acts of intimate kindness, like post cards or gifts sent back while he was away on vacation. An admiring public returned the respect with dozens of business awards and citations over the decades. With the Ivy Award, his peers in the American hospitality business once elected him America's top restaurateur. Closer to home, the Traub Award, Savannah's premier hospitality award, came to him the first year it was given, after admirers created it to honor Traub and his late wife, Franklin Smith Traub. Herb Traub is survived by his son Herbert S. Traub, III, daughter-in-law Dr. Ulrike Patzl, and grandson Herbert S. Traub, IV, of Vienna, Austria; his son Richard Lilienthal Traub; daughter-in-law Mary Whiting, and granddaughters Sarah and Rebecca Traub of Blue Hill, Maine; daughter Kimberly Kron Traub Ribbens and grandsons Pieter and Lucas Ribbens, of Savannah; his brother Stephen L. Traub and sister-in-law Elizabeth Traub of Savannah, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Traub had a special fondness for Armstrong College, his alma mater, and he was recently excited that Armstrong Atlantic State University had begun offering courses in historic preservation, hospitality, and other arts relevant to developing and marketing Savannah's assets. To support this program, remembrances may be sent to Armstrong Atlantic State University Foundation, Herbert S. Traub, Jr. Award, 11935 Abercorn Street, Savannah 31419. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at Congregation Mickve Israel on Monterey Square. Interment will be private. Just shared a memory today, 3/13/21 of this wonderful man. His daughter Kim, decades ago when our kids shared a preschool and later a p.s. that Herb volunteered at, told me she got her a dad a certificate for the Sinkers' Club because he ate over his kitchen sink : ) So many wonderful memories of Savannah that never make it into publication. I've enjoyed sitting in Herb's old restaurant pre-pandemic, now a Starbucks drive thru only since last March, enjoying Lola Collins stories from her daughter about being a hostess there in the 1960s? 70s?

When Bryan Gary call with the news of Herb, it brough memories of when I was station at Hunter AFB in 1950 and,to make a long story short, Herb took me into his home a made me feel at home. From there I met some wonderful famlies of Savannah that made my stay more than just an assignment. The Kurt Nannigan Family, Bryan and others. Our House
on Victory Drive became my house. We became friends and visited over the past 60 years. He will be missed as I knew him as a "true southern gentleman".

Oh, the memories I have of "Uncle Herb"...known to those north of THE LINE as the Seventh Winsch Brother. My dad Ed ('Mit-ter Aid') considered Herb his closest and dearest friend. I remember the 3-day drives down from NY each summer in a small sedan with mom, dad and us 4 (at the time) little ones. What kept us happy was the thought that Herb would send us back up north with a box full of crepe-paper balls that produced trinkets when unwound. Dad would let us unroll them and let the paper stream out the car windows-but not till we crossed the GA line. Maybe those SC police saw us and thought "just some more happy returnees from the Pirate's House"... Then there was the Christmas card that was sent back & forth between Herb and my Uncle Marty for 10+years. A Christmas box of goodies, including benne wafers, PH Tshirts and Round tuits, would arrive at our door each year with each item individually wrapped. I can picture Herb gleefully filling baskets in the gift shop :-) I still use my PH cookbook! Thank you for sharing your dad with us Yankees. We'll treasure his memory always.
With love and gratitude, Lorie, Ed jr, Kevin, Steve, Ro, Marybeth and our families.

Kim,

What great memories I have of your Dad. He was one of the kindest and most generous people I've ever met. I will always remember the lessons he taught me in business and customer service when I worked at the Pirates House in the summer during college. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Kim,Pieter, and Lucas---"Miss Janis" will never forget Herb Traub as being the honorary grandfather in my class at Maggie's.The first time he showed up to sit in the rocking chair and just be grandfather and read stories I asked him what the children should call him."Herb",he answered,"I'm just Herb.".But quite often he was called " Grandpa" and we could see the twinkle in his eyes---but did the twinkle ever grow when one of you walked up to him!The three of you were his heart and soul.Richard and I became engaged at The Pirates House and Herb noticed that Richard was fidgeting with a ring box,had the waitress come over with that wonderful trifle lit by sparklers, and then after I gave Richard a "yes"he came over and kissed me on the cheek.Little did I know then that our paths would ever cross.I know that the three of you have been beyond blessed to have the grandest of fathers and grandfathers beside you these recent years. With all my prayers and blessings for you and all your family.I'm so glad I spotted him at the Mannheim Steamroller concert--gave him a wave and he smiled that Herb smile. What a legacy!Janis

I guess I have known Mr. Traub all fifty-eight years of my life because my mother, Ionia worked for him at the Pirates House for thirty-two years before she retired. I remember when my brothers and I would come with my dad to pick mom up from work at nights we would always gravitate to the treasure chest (still at the Pirates House) with those luscious lolly pops--Mr. Traub would see us eyeing them and would tell us to get as many as we wanted. My mother died in 2005 and I asked Mr. Traub to speak at her funeral and he considered it a great honor that I had ask him to do so. Mr. Traub was a very good man (even to the little kids : ^ )) and I know he will be sadly missed by everyone. I would like to offer my condolences to the family on your loss but I know you must be extremely proud to have had a father like him around for so long.

Kim,
It breaks my heart that your dad has gone, but, I smile because I know where he's at - and whom he's with! He and I had a special relationship - he was my favorite person in the world and I his favorite insurance agent. Not a New Year's Day will pass by that he will not be in my thoughts as that was "our" day to talk. He will be missed and loved always.

I first met Herb in 1944, after a "Shows for the Boys", put on, I believe, by the JC's. He was a great friend, easy to know. He had that winning way about him - always upbeat. I remember his first venture, "Our House", on Victory Drive, where he served one special dessert - a Bit of Heaven". My wife, Phyllis, and I have enjoyed our friendship with him and his family, and we pray for them now. Herb, enjoy a bit of heaven!

I remember Mr. Traub as man of great kindness and generosity.

Around 1981 my girlfriend and I had went to the Pirates House to eat and not having a reservation had to wait to be seated. While waiting my girlfriend, who suffered from epilepsy, had a seizure almost in front of the checkout counter and Mr. Traub responded immediately. Although other customers had to step around her and although another employee suggested that we might move her Mr. Traub said that she was just fine where she was at and stayed with her and me while she went through her seizure.

After her seizure we were seated but my girlfriend had another seizure and we could never get served since the restaurant was closing.

Thanking Mr. Traub for his help we were about to leave without having eaten since we were about the only people left in the restaurant but Mr. Traub asked us to wait a few more minutes.

After a short while an employee told us that Mr. Traub wanted to see us in the employee's lounge and following this person to the back of the restaurant we noticed that a large table fully set up with candles and place settings with two chairs awaited us.

Mr. Traub asked us what we had intended to order and after telling him he waited our table and even poured our wine.

After eating we went to the checkout to pay our bill but Mr. Traub, like the true gentleman that he was, said that the dinner was on him and invited us back.

Later when my girlfriend applied for disability we visted the Pirates House and spoke to Mr. Traub about writing a letter about what he had observed that night and without hesitation he agreed to do so and a few days later my girlfriend received a very detailed letter written on the restaurant's letterhead telling about her seizure and her reactions which went a long way in helping her get her disability started.

I can think of many who would have said that they were too busy or may have told us that night that they were now closed and would have never had been so kind as Mr. Traub had been to my girlfriend and myself.

Mr. Traub's kindness turned what could have been an awful night into one that my girlfriend would remember until she died in 1995 and one that I will never forget.

Prayers to his family and friends to a very kind and generous man who will be deeply missed by many.

How lucky we in Savannah have been to have had Herb Traub make his home with us! One of the traditions my family had when I was growing up was that, whenever me or one of my brothers had a birthday, we either got to go to a restaurant of our choice or my mom would fix us whatever dinner & dessert we wanted. I always chose the Pirates House! I remember to this day always going over to the corner where the tunnel was, and imagining buried treasure still hidden somewhere in those brick walls. The atmosphere was imaginative, the food was always wonderful, and the best thing to a young boy was the "Atomic Sundae" served to kids on their birthdays: a big scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with colored sprinkles, and a flaming sparkler sticking out the top of it! That always turned heads in the dining room -- and thrilled those of us who got one. Fifty years later, and I still remember that. Thank you, Mr. Traub, for adding a great deal of magic to a young life.

I am sorry to learn of the loss of Herb Traub. I had the honor to work with him as a bus boy on 2 different occasions while I attended college. One of the things that impressed me the most was watching him do the some of the dirty jobs that had to be done at the restaurant and when we catered to businesses. Whatever needed to be done he was there to do it. He was one of the most respected bosses that I have ever worked for. He would listen to you when you had problems and would go out of his way to help his employees.

My sympathy to his family for their tremendous loss

Many years ago I had the privilege of working at the Pirates House. I learned many things from working there and met many fine people. The family atmosphere is what I remember most about the Traubs and the Pirates House. Learning to make and present flaming desserts and other food and drink presentations that lent to making the customers dining experience a special event. The last time I saw Mr. Traub was in a bank. He hugged me and greated me with genuine affection, as if he were greeting a loved family member. My thoughts and prayers are with you Kit and Family during this time of bereavement. Your father was indeed a special man.

My sincere sympathy to the Traub family. I have always thought that Herb Traub was one of the kindest men in Savannah. A few years after he retired, I ran into him serving lunch for the homeless at the soup kitchen on Bryan St. When I asked him if he was ever going to get out of the food business, he laughed and said, "Oh Fran....I love this job! And besides.....these are the best customers I've ever had. They all love the food and no one ever has a complaint!" Every time I ride by Daffin Park I think of Mr. Traub and remember how hard he worked to raise the money for the wonderful fountains. He was a great man who will be missed by everyone who knew him.
