Horace Osborne Obituary

Horace Henry Osborne, MD - SAVANNAH - Horace Henry Osborne, MD, 86, died August 1, 2008 at Memorial University Medical Center. He was born in Savannah April 16, 1922, son of the late Elton Smith Osborne and Martha Solomon Osborne. He attended Armstrong Junior College 1940-41, University of Georgia 1941-43 and the University of Maryland Medical College 1943-46. He married Anne Carey Riggs December 29, 1942 at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Athens, Georgia. After medical school, he served his internship at San Bernardino County Hospital in San Bernardino, California 1946-47. From there, he served his residency in ophthalmology at Oliver General Hospital in Augusta, Georgia 1948-49. In 1950, he attended flight surgeon's training, School of Aviation Medicine and from 1956-58 he completed his residency in anesthesiology at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. He served as a Medical Officer in the United States Air Force and attained the rank of Lt. Colonel serving in many capacities at various assignments including those of Chief of Professional services, Hospital Commander, and Chief of Aviation Medicine for the Washington, D.C. area (5 years). Dr. Osborne served as Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, Georgia 1966-1978, Chief of Anesthesia, Forest Hills Division of Veterans Administration Hospital, Augusta, Georgia 1969-1978, Medical Staff of the Veterans Administration Outpatient Medical Center, Greenville, South Carolina 1978-1980, Medical Director for TREND Psychiatric Clinic, Hendersonville, North Carolina 1980-1983. He was a member of the Vestry of The Church of the Transfiguration, Saluda, North Carolina in the 1980's. Dr. Osborne retired and lived in Saluda, North Carolina from 1983-2000, Aiken, South Carolina from 2000-2004 and Savannah, Georgia from 2004-2008. Surviving are his children, Henry Riggs Osborne, LTC USA (Ret.) of Highlands Ranch, CO; Molly Osborne Fulton, BA, M ed; Spotsylvania, VA; Margaret Osborne Henneke, BSN, Saluda, NC; Catherine Osborne Mathews, BSN of Aiken, SC; William Elton Osborne, MD, Savannah, GA; brother, William Wilson Osborne, MD of Savannah, GA sisters, Louise Osborne Ogden of Savannah, GA; Martha Osborne Adams of Athens, GA; grandchildren, Nathan Scott Osborne, Christina Marie Osborne, Virginia Fulton Congleton, Gerald Christopher Fulton, Mary Kathleen Henneke, Kelsey Anne Henneke, Charles Riggs Mathews, Ethan Henry Mathews, John Sognier Osborne, Emily Anne Osborne and Henry Elton Osborne; great grandchild, Isaac Fulton Congleton. Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 11, 2008 at St. John's Church of Savannah, 1 West Macon Street with a reception to follow at the parish house. Interment will be private. Remembrances should be sent as gifts to St. John's Church, 1 West Macon St., Savannah, GA 31401 and the Church of the Transfiguration, P.O. Box 275, Saluda, NC 28773. I will always remember Dr. Osborne over at the Oaks, I loved going in and teasing and talking with him everyday. We would laugh and carry on about going out on a date sometime. I will miss him. My sympathies to all the family.
