Jacques Henry Thomas du Val d'Epremesnil - WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Jacques Henry Thomas du Val d'Epremesnil of Winston-Salem, North Carolina passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 29th, 2009. He was born in Paris, France on January 6, 1930 to Le Baron Richard du Val d'Epremesnil and La Baronne Adeline Oxnard d'Epremesnil. As a young boy, he lived with his family on their farm, Rocreuse near Maire, France, learning to fly fish which became a lifelong passion. Immediately following the liberation of France at the close of World War II, he came to the United States and attended McDonough Military School in Owings Mills, Maryland, spending time with his maternal grandmother at her farm, Edgewood in Upperville, Virginia, during vacations from school. He graduated from McDonough in 1949 and from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia in 1953. Following graduation from college, he served in the U.S. Army medical corps at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He married Susan Ann Mayes of Birmingham, Alabama on July 12, 1957 and then began a lifelong career as an investment advisor. He spent the early years of married life in New York, New York and in Washington, DC, settling at Old Mill Farm in Maryland outside of Washington, DC in 1964, where he lived until settling in Winston-Salem in 2003. He was active in the Citizens' Association of Montgomery County, a member of the Bass Anglers of Maryland, founder of the Montgomery County Fly Fishing Club and a member of The Jockey Club (Paris, France). He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Susan Ann Mayes d'Epremesnil. He is survived by his daughter, Nadine d'Epremesnil Hall, son-in-law, Mark Allen Hall; grandson, Jacques Hall and granddaughter, Mary Brooks Hall, all of Winston-Salem; brother, Romain d'Epremesnil and sister-in-law, Margery Paxton d'Epremesnil of Carry-le-Rouet, France, niece, Diane d'Epremesnil of Grand-Leez, Belgium and nephews, Geraud d'Epremesnil and Alain d'Epremesnil of Obigies, Belgium; nieces, Marie-Ange de Pierredon Callaud of Brion, France and Lilliane de Pierredon Fawcett of London, England, daughters of his deceased sister, Countess Adeline d'Epremesnil de Pierredon; sister-in-law, Linda Mayes Nelson and niece Allison Nelson Goodenough of Pell City, Alabama and nephew, Patrick Nelson of Memphis, Tennessee; nephew, Barron Smith, son of his deceased sister-in-law, Billie Mayes Smith, of Lexington, South Carolina. The family will receive friends on Friday, October 9th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Salem Funeral Home. A Memorial Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving will be held on Saturday, October 10th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
