Jane Parker Obituary

Dr. Jane Jones Parker died Saturday, July 5, 2003 at Tara at Thunderbolt. She received her early education in the public schools of Savannah, GA. Upon graduating from Beach High School in 1937, she entered Talladega College from which she received the Bachelor of Music Degree. Her additional Degrees include, Masters of Music from the University of Michigan, Professional Diploma from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Florida State University. Further training included matriculation at The Julliard School of Music and Indiana University through a Foreign Music study. Dr. Parker began her early teaching career at Cuyler Jr. High School. She later taught in the Baltimore, MD public schools, and became a Supervisor of Music. Upon completion of her PhD, she joined the Music Faculty at the Florida State University. She later joined the Faculty at Savannah State college from which she retired in 1982. Dr. Parker was a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church. She held membership in the Savannah Symphony Womens Guild, King-Tisdell Cottage, NAACP, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, National Smart Set, Inc., Coastal Jazz Association and several professional organizations. Survivors: a devoted brother, Samuel C. Parker, Jr.; sister-in-law, Marian M. Parker; two nephews, Samuel C. Parker, III, and David M. (Celia) Parker; several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, at St. Matthews Episcopal Church. Burial: Laurel Grove South Cemetery.
