Mr. John Barton, Jr. - SAVANNAH - On Wednesday, March 12, 2008, Mr. John Benjamin Barton Jr. passed away at the age of 64. He was a native of Savannah Ð Chatham County, Georgia. He was born on December 16, 1943 to the union of the late Mr. John Benjamin Barton, Sr. and the late Mrs. Dannie Denson Barton. Preceded in death by brothers, Richard Barton and Leroy Barton. At the age of 7, he joined Butler Presbyterian. He was the eldest of four siblings. He attended the Chatham County Public Schools and graduated from Sol. C. Johnson with the class of 1961. He also attended Savannah State University. Mr. Barton was joined in Holy matrimony in June 1961 to Thomasina Shiela Hayward of Savannah, Georgia. In 1965, he converted to Islam and joined the Nation of Islam in Harlem, NY. He has lived in Savannah, Georgia for the last 35 years. He worked as a commercial shrimper and dock builder. He leaves to mourn his passing, a loving wife Thomasina Barton; six children; two daughters, Theresa Barton Conyers, Monique Barton Stephens; four sons, Yusef J. Barton, Ahmad K. Barton, Omar H. Barton and Dawan Barton; one sister, Gloria J. Barton; one brother-in-law, Otis (Emma) Hayward; one father-in-law, Robert L. Hunter, 14 grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Visitation: 7-8 pm Friday at Williams & Williams Funeral Home.
