SAVANNAH _ John Joseph Hegarty died peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 3, 2021.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Marian Hegarty; brother, Daniel Patrick Hegarty (Anne); sister, Veronica Hegarty Gunderson (Joe); and his two aunts that helped raise him, Mae and Isabel Hegarty
John was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. He served 24 years as a Mounted Police Officer in New York City. He had a great knowledge for the love and care of horses. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served his country with pride during the Korean War.
John was a member of St. Frances Cabrini as well as the Knights of Columbus.
Surviving is his loving wife of 53 years, Moira Charles Hegarty; son and daughter-in-law, Joseph Charles Hegarty, M.D. and JoAnne Hegarty.
John was a dedicated grandfather to six, Brianna Elizabeth, Aiden Joseph, Shannon Rose, Michaela Anne, Liam John, and Killian Charles Hegarty; two step grandchildren, Elizabeth Anne and Henry Walker Bowden; and 21 nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Friday, February 5, 2021 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. The Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be private and held at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church with Rev. Gabe Cummings officiating. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in John's honor to St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, 11500 Middleground Road, Savannah, GA 31419.
