Captain Joseph A. Dragon, Sr. - RICHMOND HILL - Captain Joseph A. Dragon, Sr., 79, died Monday, May 5, 2008 at home under the care of Hospice Savannah. Captain Dragon was a native of New Orleans, LA, and came to Richmond Hill, GA, after retiring as a tugboat Captain having fulfilled many years of service with Crescent Towing. Captain Dragon was well known in the City of New Orleans for his dedication to his company, his tugboat handling skills, and his knowledge of the waterways, both nationally and internationally. Friends and colleagues agree that the likes of Capt. Dragon's boat handling were few and far between. He also helped in the teaching of many mariners in their trade. The job he was most proud of was passing his legacy on to his four sons who are all currently working in the marine industry. He was a. US Army veteran of the Korean War. Captain Dragon was well respected and loved by many. He was preceded in death by his first wife Vera Palmisano Dragon, son Darren Christopher Dragon and a sister Gloria Dragon Ledet. Captain Dragon is survived by his wife, Evelyn Dragon; four sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph A, and Michelle Dragon, Jr., of Dayton, TN, Derek and Laurie Dragon, Audie and Heather Dragon both of Richmond Hill and Lance and Jeanne Dragon of Tickfaw, LA; three step-daughters, Diane Holm of Richmond Hill, GA, Jolier Bragg of Sardis, GA, and Melissa Miller of Tall, FL; brother, Edward W. Dragon, Jr., of Avondale, LA; sister, Lucille Dragon of Avondale, LA, 19 grandchildren and 20 great- grandchildren. Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2008 11:00 a.m., at Carter Funeral Home Bryan Chapel. There will be another Memorial Service in New Orleans at a later date. In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association in his honor. Audie, Lance, Derek, and Joey....
My condolences for the loss of your dad.
Capt. Joe was truly a professional mariner, weather he was in the river, or out "tideland". He brought up so many of us to the wheelhouse and will be remembered as one of the back bone captains of Crescent Towing.
