Dr. Joe Hobbs was my favorite professor at NC State. He and I shared a mutual respect for my veteran status from serving overseas before and after my time at NC State. As a person and as a professor, he always got the students to question different topics in history. He encouraged us to not look at the surface of events but to really investigate to come to our own conclusions. It's been 6 years since I had a class with him and I still speak with others about the times we had in there. NC State and History has lost a great asset.

To the Hobbs Family,
May you turn to God during this time in order to find comfort and solace! The Wolfpack community and certainly the History Department was greatly impacted by Dr. Hobbs devotion to teaching and research. God bless you all!

Dr. Joe Hobbs took me under his wing as a freshman. I had little self confidence, and Joe woke me up. He always wanted us to think independently, out of the box. His passion was the WHY question: why did this happen? He was the best professor I ever had. Thanks to him I graduated in 1973. I am blessed that he remained a friend to the end here in Raleigh. He was a great guy!

Joe and I taught together at NCSU back in the late 1970s. I am now nearing the end of my college-teaching career and most everything I know about teaching that has ever really worked, I learned from Joe. We are, all of us, unique creatures, but Joe was the most original individual I have known in my life. Beneath the engaging quirkiness was an exceedingly smart and decent man. The world seems sadly emptier without him. I have made a contribution to Columbia Second Chance, our local no-kill animal shelter, in his memory.

In October 1972, we were told my mother, who was diagnosed with lung cancer the previous July, had about 4 months to live. I was home from NCSU that weekend and cried as I drove the 3 hours back to campus on Sunday afternoon. When I got to Apex, I called my advisor at home. He was at a dinner party at his office mate's (Dr. Banker)---also one of my professors--- home. I called there and told him what was going on. He said he would meet me at his office in half an hour, and he showed up with a new box of Kleenex and stayed up with me until well after midnight as I cried and grieved the impending loss of my best friend and cheerleader. Joseph Patrick Hobbs passed on Wednesday. He was an incredible teacher, not just of history but of life; a fine person; a true and honest friend. I was so blessed to have him in my life.

Joe was one of my advisors in the History Department back in my 69-71 years at NC State. He was good at getting you to think and question and was just a great guy to talk and listen to. I even watched him in recent years (as well as Dr. John Riddle) on public TV channels that played some of his courses and History was made better by the way he presented it.

Dr. Hobbs was one of my all-time favorite professors at NCSU. He was an outstanding scholar with a great sense of humor---a true inspiration for many generations of students. I feel blessed to have been in his classes. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I am very deeply saddened to learn that my college professor and degree adviser, Doctor Joseph Patrick Hobbs has passed away. Please read the full article. He was a historian of many achievements but maintained a focus on teaching his undergraduate students. He was a wealth of knowledge and insight, honest and helpful in criticism, and moderating in advice. His door was always open for his students. It was impressive at times how large of a crowd we could gather in that small office to carry on a discussion of current and historical events. Goodbye and safe travels Dr. Hobbs.

It was with sadness that I saw Joseph Hobbs' name in the Obituary column today. I had lost track of him through the years. We started the First Grade together at Cathedral School in 1940. Joseph was by far the smartest person in our class. We were always given something to memorize and had to raise our hand to recite it back to the teacher when we were finished. No matter how long the poem, Joseph's hand went up within minutes. I always knew he had a great future ahead of him. My deepest sympathy to his wife and family. I was one of the kids who rode the school bus from Our Lady of Lourdes in Pt. Wentworth. God bless you all.
Sincerely, Roxie Barras Bryant

Pat,
You were a man of few words, but when you spoke they always stuck in my head. I loved coming over before school and watching Public Access with you while I waited for Holli to frantically figure out what she was going to wear (Even though it was uniform apparel) You were so loving in your own way and had such a big heart when it came to Holly and her friends. You will be missed!
