Jude George Cleary

Hendersonville, NC - Mr. Jude George Cleary of Hendersonville and formerly of Belmont, NC died Friday, December 09, 2005 at Park Ridge Hospital. Mr. Cleary was born May 23, 1926 in Savannah, GA, a son of the late George Joseph, Sr. and Anna Travers Cleary. He was a US Air Force Veteran of World War II and was a graduate of Georgia Tech where he earned his BS degree in mechanical engineering. After further education in theology, Jude was a monk of Belmont Abbey from 1950-1978. He served as President of the college in 1969 - 1970, and was Abbott of the Monastery and Chancellor of Belmont Abbey College from 1975 - 1978. Survivors of Mr. Cleary include his wife of 27 years, Theresa Muller Cleary of Hendersonville; daughters and son -in-law, Meghann and Cameron House of Birmingham, AL; Maura Williams of Hendersonville, NC; granddaughter, Samantha House of Birmingham; brother and sister-in-law, Bernard T. and Linda Cleary of Savannah, GA; nephew and nieces, Greg, Elaine, Annette, and Chanel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 1 pm, Monday, December 12, 2005 at Belmont Abbey with Abbott Placid as celebrant. Interment will follow the service in Belmont Abbey Cemetery. Visitation will be held tonight from 7 - 8 p.m., at McLean Funeral Directors of Belmont. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jude Cleary Memorial Scholarship Fund, Belmont Abbey College, Belmont, NC 28012.
