Dr. Jules Victor, Jr., 90, died Tuesday, January 03, 2006 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jules and Cecelia Kassell Victor. He is survived by his devoted wife of sixty-two years, Leonora Huguenin Victor, and their three loving children: daughter, Carol Ann and husband George Erwin, and Carol Ann's two daughters, Cynthia Register of Atlanta and Alicia Workman and her husband Shawn of Savannah; son Jules Victor, III, wife Barbara and their three children, Courtney, Leonora and Jules IV; and son Neil Huguenin Victor, wife Patti and their three children Steven, Neil, and Meredith. He was additionally blessed with six great-grandchildren: Tessa Register, Hunter, Mia, Abigail and Alex Workman and William Victor. He also leaves behind his beloved brother, Irving Victor and wife Cissie, and several nephews, nieces, and many, many dear patients and good friends. Dr. Victor was born in Savannah, Georgiaon June 4, 1915. He received his education in the public schools of Savannah, graduated from Savannah High School, and received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Georgia, where he lettered in LaCrosse and was the Captain of the Boxing team. He attained his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. He completed his residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida, where he earned distinction for performing the world's first packed cell transfusion. He proudly served his country in the Navy Medical Corps as a Lieutenant Commander during World War II. He returned to Savannah in 1946 and began the city's first Internal Medicine practice. He was well regarded as an instructor at the nursing schools for both Memorial Medical Center and St. Joseph's Hospital. Dr. Victor participated in the founding of the Memorial Medical Center and the Medical Arts Physician's Center. He also served as clinical instructor for the Medical College of Georgia. He was Chief of Staff of St. Joseph's Hospital, President of the Memorial Medical Center, and President of the Georgia Medical Society. He was extremely active in the field of diabetes, being instrumental in opening the first diabetic wing and diabetic ambulatory services at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was a charter member and President of the Georgia Diabetes Association. In 1996 Dr. Victor was recognized for fifty years of service to St. Joseph's Hospital, where it was stated that "over the span of five decades, his affability, congeniality, ready wit, good nature and kindness had been a charismatic beacon to all who called him a friend, his patient and peer alike". In 2003, Dr. Victor was awarded the John Rabun Award by the Georgia Medical Society. It was given in recognition of his contributions not only to health care but to the community at large. Dr. Victor retired from medicine in 2003 when his health no longer allowed him to continue practicing. Dr. Victor was a devoted member of St. John'sEpiscopal Church. He was an avid supporter of Anglican traditional liturgy and a member of the 1928 Prayer Book Society. He served as a delegate to the Georgia Diocesan Convention for twelve years, and was elected three times as a delegate to the Episcopal General Convention to represent the diocese of Georgia. He faithfully attended the Sunday morning early Holy communion service and served on the vestry as Senior Warden for two terms. He was a Vestry Emeritus and attended all Vestry meeting until he could no longer leave his home. Dr. Victor was a member of the Savannah Golf Club, the First City club, Fraternal Order of Masons, the Solomon's Lodge the German Heritage Society, and served as President of the Chatham club. He was the team physician of the Savannah Country Day Football team for twenty two years. Upon retiring, his dedication was recognized at a dinner held in his honor where it was announced that he had only missed one game in all of his years of service. Dr. Victor was also an exuberant fan of the University of Georgia's football team. He also thoroughly enjoyed Tybee Island where he resided every weekend for the last twenty-five years. Dr. Victor touched so many lives in our community, but most assuredly his primary focus was his family. His wisdom, strength, and powerful love of life and compassion for others will be the legacy for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to emulate in the coming years. They will live according to the life guide he taught: "To love God and man and to seek to serve them both." Funeral Services will be Saturday, January 7, 2006 at 11:30 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church. The family will receive guests at the Parish House following the service. Memories and Condolences
for Jules Victor

Not sure what to say?

There has never been...nor will there ever be....another man so gentle, so gracious, so compassionate as Dr Victor,Jr (or as we lovingly referred to him after Bubba entered practice, as "Daddy")!

I have had the privilige of knowing Dr Victor all of my life...it was he who informed my mother of her pregnancy with me in 1951. I can vividly remember from my childhood the visits to Dr Victor's office with Mom and after I outgrew Dr Mazo's pediatric table...it was only natural to seek medical care from this gentleman physician. I will never forget the many kindnesses, the many hugs and always the "God bless you" when walking out of his office...with my Mom or alone after a visit. I will always be thankful for Dr Victor's concern and treatment of our Mom - especially during those days before her death. She trusted no other doctor...she would always say to the consulting physicians "it's okay if it is okay with Jules"!

At St Joseph's (where I have worked for many a year)he always had a smile, a kind word and a welcome word of medical wisdom.

I truly believe God knows when we are tired and that we have fulfilled our purpose here on earth and He reaches down to gently lift us to our eternal home with Him in Heaven.

May God bless each of you with warm and loving memories to keep the "hole in your heart" filled for eternity.

With loving prayers,

Jane

Dear Mrs. Victor and family, it is with great sadness I have learned of the passing of Dr. Victor. I will be forever grateful for the loving care he gave my father, Rufus Hodges. My daddy truly loved him not only as his doctor but as a friend . Dr. Victor always called me "Kid" and continually soothed my concerns during the years of illness daddy went through. He was never to busy to speak with me or return the many calls I made from my Florida home. He watched over my daddy for me and words cannot express how grateful I am to have known him.I enjoyed the many visits my daddy and I had with him, the two of them would laugh together and it seemed they tried to outdo one another with their stories, what a joy. I know the world is a better place because he gave so much of himself to it.

Thank you Dr. Victor and Mrs. Victor for the light you have brought to all of us. Heaven has another one of the "good guys".

Dear Victor Family, my sympathies to all of you during this difficult time. Dr. Victor was a wonderfully kind and generous man and will be truly missed. It’s so ironic to think of the different circumstances that have brought our families together over the past several years and to know Dr. Victor was the first family member I had the privilege of meeting. During the two years that I worked in medical records at St. Joseph’s Hospital many years ago, he was always such a bright spot in everyone’s day when he would come in. He truly loved taking care of his patients and being kind to everyone he came in contact with. God bless.

Dr. Victor had not just been a doctor to our family, but also a great friend. He had not only taken care of my grandfather, for quite a while before he died in the 1950's, my grandmother in the 1960's and my mother in 2001. He will be very much missed. He was "one of a kind".

My deepest sympathies to the Victor family for their loss. Dr. Victor was our "team physician" for our high school football team and always kept us in the game. Dr Victor put up a tremendous fight against a terrible disease, just as he lived and fought for others against their maladies. A wonderful physician, husband, father, grandfather, vestryman, church member. He is now with God.

To the Victor family My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. The first time I saw Dr. Victor was at the Taylor St. office back in the mid 50's. My aunt Ruby Barrett was his nurse after Mrs. Victor. I remember aunt Ruby taking us to the back room for a small coke as a treat. My mother who worked for Fines Dept. store said she remembered when Jules came home from the Navy and came in Fines to see his parents what a good looking man he was in his dress whites. My grand parents, parents, and in-laws and my self saw Dr. Victor in the office. I remember him making a house call when my grand mother was dying of cancer in 1954. What a GREAT man and Doctor. He will be missed by all.

Dr. Victor had an amazing fulfilling life and career, one that touched so many people. His accomplishments are well known but more importantly, he was a man of tremendous integrity and morals and gave so much of himself to others. He was a great father, husband, friend, grandad and physician and an honor to know. We should celebrate his life and all the wonderful things he did for his family and others. To live over 90 years in good health with a wonderful wife, family, stellar career and close friends who could ask for more? God certainly showed his grace and kindness upon him and all of us who were lucky enough to have spent time with him. It was a blessing to have known a man of such character and strength. A legend in the medical community, he is a role model to all physicians and I will miss him dearly.

Other than those new to Savannah, I don't think you could find many people who didn't know and love Dr. Victor. He was a dedicated family man and a physician who knew and cared for his patients personally. I first met him in the early fifties, hanging around St. Joseph's Hospital waiting for the nurses to get off duty. He always had time to speak for a moment in between rounds. He even gave me a clue or two about special nurses. He will be sorely missed by his family and by the community at large. May he rest in peace.....

It was such an honor and privelege to know Dr. Victor. He never ceased to amaze me with his incredible memory while he was still practicing medicine at the ripe 'ol age of eighty something. He never failed to recall memories of my mother and aunt with whom he worked with at Memorial Hospital. As a pharmaceutical rep, I also had the opportunity to see the constant compassion that he had for his patients at work-day in and day out. He truly had a love for helping people. Last but not least, he has raised a fine family -many of whom I have had the pleasure to know and work with. I know that he will be sorely missed having touched so many lives. I was glad to be a small part of it.

I read Dr. Victors obituary with a heart felt sadness for his Loved Ones. However, it also brought a smile and sadness to me from memories of my beloved father-in-law who was a patient of Dr. Victor. James R. Stanfield "J.R." was his name and he passed away January 4, 2000. J.R. (Dad) told lots of stories to his family members about Dr. Victor and himself laughing and joking during his visits. I met Dr. Victor a few times and found that he was a very dedicated Doctor. This family will keep each of you in our prayers.
