Not sure what to say?

Not sure if anyone is still reading this. But, I just found out today. I was preparing a letter of appreciation to Kirby for his help and encouragement. When I worked for him at Guerry Lumber, he told me I should be back in school getting a degree. He helped me get a loan to pay-off some previous student loans that would allow me to get back into school and encouraged me when I moved on to go to school full time. When I told him at the time how much it meant to me, he told me he would do it for anyone. I again ran short of money, got married and got busy with life, but in the past 2 1/2 year I have been back to school full time while raising 2 sons with my wife and working full time for John Deere. In 23 days I will complete my Bachelors in Science with a minor in eBusiness with a 3.73 GPA. In large part, because Kirby cared enough to be tough and encourage me to get back to school, I kept at it regardless of the obstacle. I am truly sorry that I will not be able to tell him how much he helped me and how I have carried his words with me all these years.

I am sorry that I did not know Kirby Beam better, but his and Lynda's generosity touched my life. Each year Lynda and Kirby sponsored an award for young journalists in Guerry's name that helped me and many others like me do better work at covering environmental issues. At the time when I was fortunate enough to receive the award, I was a reporter with no computer and my husband had just been laid off from his job. The award reflected Lynda and Kirby's lasting respect for the natural world, as well as their ability to create something positive out of personal tragedy. Kirby's activism and work at beautiful Two Holly Farm left a lasting legacy for the earth as well as the people who live on it. I am so sorry for the immense loss to his family, Savannah, and our state.
