Leland Gooding Obituary

Leland Cogdill Gooding, Sr., 90, of Savannah died Thursday, June 14, 2018, at his home under the care of Hospice Savannah.

Lee was born November 16, 1927 in Miley, S.C, the youngest child of the late Hemmie and Lillie Thomas Gooding. After graduating from Brunson High School, he served in the U.S. Navy before beginning a 43-year career with the railroad.

He started work on the Central Georgia Railroad in 1944, as a messenger boy and then retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad as the Terminal Superintendent in Augusta, Georgia. Living most of his life in Savannah, his railroad career took him to Columbus and Augusta before he retired back to Savannah in 1987.

An active member of Calvary Baptist Temple for many years, Lee served as Deacon and on various committees. He was a member of Solomon #1 Masonic Lodge for over 69 years. Lee loved to fish and spend time with his family and friends. His enjoyed watching his favorite teams play from the Georgia Bulldogs, Georgia Southern Eagles, Atlanta Falcons to the Atlanta Braves.

In addition to his parents, Lee was predeceased by his four sisters, three brothers and his wife, Mary "Chick" Smiley Gooding. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Dill and Cathy Gooding of Savannah; his grandson, Brent Gooding (Stacy) of Senoia, GA; his granddaughter, Kelli Tapley (Brad) of Evans, GA; and his four great grandchildren: Tenley Tapley, Hudson Gooding, Briggs Tapley, and Nolan Gooding; along with many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Robert Brown, Dr. Robert Rollings, Dr. Craig Saxton and Hospice Savannah. They would also like to give special thanks to his caregivers Deborah Scott, Josephine Green, Melissa Green and Zeppone Caring Hands for all they did these past few months.

Visitation will be Monday, June 18, at Fox & Weeks Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Calvary Baptist Temple Tuesday, June 19, at 11:00 a.m. with burial at Forest Lawn Cemetery officiated by Rev. Kenny Grant and Dr. Tom Smiley.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Calvary Baptist Temple or Hospice Savannah.
