Marion Manson Obituary

Marion Hugh Manson (90) died November 24, 2017 in Gainesville, GA surrounded by his wife, Carolyn, his children and grandchildren.

He was born July 29, 1927 in Savannah, GA and lived in Savannah for all but a couple of years of his life before relocating to Gainesville, GA last year to be near family in that area.

Marion was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and served overseas during the Korean War in 1951-1952. He was an active member of Dog Company D and The Marine Corp League in Savannah. Marion was instrumental in planning and erecting the Korean War Memorial located on Bay Street honoring Marines from Savannah for their service in Korea.

His early education included 38th Street School, Charles Ellis Elementary, Richard Arnold Jr High and graduating from Savannah High School in 1945. After attending Armstrong Junior College, he graduated from Southern Technical Institute in Marietta, GA in June of 1954.

In 1990, after 25 years, Marion retired from The Savannah Morning News-Evening Press. Responsibilities at the paper included positions of National Accounts Representative, National Advertising Manager, Outside Classified Supervisor and Classified Advertising Manager. During those years he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, International Management Association, New Car Dealers Association, Used Car Dealers Association, Real Estate Association, Apartment Association, Savannah Ad Club, and Home Builders Association. Also, as a volunteer in civic organizations, Marion served as Past President and organizer of River Trace Homeowners Association and served, for over 10 years, as an officer in The Wesley Community Center, a Board of Directors member for the Silent Witness Program and on the Clean Community Advisory Council (now Keep Savannah Beautiful Organization).

Marion was extremely active in his church and other Christian organizations for all of his life. As a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for almost 50 years; he served as President of the Trinity United Methodist Men. Later as a member of White Bluff United Methodist Church he was elected President of White Bluff United Methodist Men, Savannah Sub District United Methodist Men, Savannah District United Methodist Men, and a Certified Lay Speaker for the United Methodist Church - Savannah District. He also served as an usher, Sunday School teacher, Stewardship Chairman, Member of the Council on Ministries, Administrative Board, District and Conference Council on Ministries, and the District Committee on Superintendants. He is considered a Life Member of United Methodist Men.

This past year, in 2016, Marion completed 25 years of post-retirement work as a Player Assistant at The Landings Golf Club. A lover of all things golf, Marion once shot 83 at age 87. He was a member of the Senior Golf Blitz at Bacon Park and played with his sons and grandsons as often as possible.

To the family and friends of Marion,

Marion served our club and our members at The Landings for 25 years. He was always kind, caring and supremely respectful toward everyone he came on contact with. Every interaction with Marion was encouraging and left you feeling like you were in the company of a truly good man - a man whose character we would all do well to emulate. I know many of us at The Landings Club are saddened to learn of your loss but the more relevant emotion seems to be that we all rejoice in the fact that we had a chance to work with Marion and call him our friend and colleague.

Praying for God's peace and comfort during this time.

I always enjoyed seeing Marion around The Landings, and we were quite friendly for may years--he was one of my favorite people on Skidaway Island. My condolences for your loss.
