Marion Nettles Obituary

Marion Clifton (MC) Nettles - CLYO - Marion Clifton (MC) Nettles was born on March 8, 1921 in Coosawhatchie, South Carolina and passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2016 at his home on the Savannah River in Clyo, Georgia. MC began his life journey growing up on the Kress family's land, Buckfield Plantation, in Yemassee, South Carolina. At the age of 14, he moved to Savannah and started working at the DeSoto Hotel. During World War II, MC contributed to the war efforts by working in the naval shipyard on the Liberty ships as told in the book, On the Swing Shift by Tony Cope. Years later he founded Nettles Refrigeration and ran the business for four decades before retiring to the river in Clyo. He was a 50-year member of the Alee Shriners in Savannah and longtime member of the Clyo Hunting Club. MC was baptized as a child in the Combahee River in South Carolina and was a member of Mizpah United Methodist Church and Wilmington Island United Methodist Church. For the last thirty years, his favorite activities were hunting with members of the Long family and having friends and family stop by the cabin on the river to visit. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Marion Clifton Nettles, Sr. and Beulah Elizabeth Peeples Nettles; his brother, Norris Nettles; his son, Marion Clifton Cliff Nettles, III; wives, Jean Marie Guild Nettles and Virginia Smith Nettles. MC is survived by three granddaughters, Christy Nettles David (Brian), Barbara Nettles, and Debra Nettles Mahany (Jeff); great-grandchildren, William Will David, Margaret Meg David and Joseph Mahany; sister, Marian Nettles Munn; cousins, Joe (Jeannette) Burns, Jerry (Sandra) Burns and Jon (Dayle) Burns. The family would like to thank MC's dedicated caregivers in the last year of his life: Roberta Turner, Linda Turner, Tonya Lee and Alice Adams. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. in the chapel. Interment will follow in the Ridgeland Cemetery, Ridgeland, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances be sent to Hospice Savannah, 1352 Eisenhower Drive, Savannah, Georgia 31406 or Mizpah United Methodist Church, 122 Mizpah Road, Clyo, Georgia 31303. I did a lot of work for Mr. Nettles for 20 years until he retired. He always gave me good advice and I considered him a friend. Always enjoyed visiting him at the River. My thoughts are with his family.

When I was writing the book on the shipyard in Savannah, I talked at length with M.C. and he was extremely helpful with stories about the yard, the people who worked there and his own experiences. I am extremely grateful for his assistance and very sorry to hear of his passing. Tony Cope

I never met MC but I know with all my heart that he was a loved grand-dad and great grand-dad. His grand-daughters will truly miss him and their trips to the river house. His youngest grandson Joseph brought warmth to his heart as soon as he came through the door, you can see the light in both their eyes light up in the many pictures of them together. Rest in peace knowing you were loved and will be missed greatly!

MC Nettles was our neighbor and he was like a second father to me. He was a kind and gentle man and I am the better for knowing him. MC loved God, his family, and his country. Thank you MC for your friendship and guidance over the years and thank you for believing in me. It has made all the difference in the world.

The Nettles were our next door neighbors on Wilmington Island Road .My father John Wu and MC were very close. When MC was deciding to purchase the property next door which was to small , my father told MC to use what part of our property that he needed ,a kind of friendship that doesnt exist in todays world .He was a kind man always willing to help with any problem .
