Nick was an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Downtown Savannah. That is where I first met him. Every week he greeted me with a smile and a kind word. He was very supportive of the Rotary Foundation and became a Paul Harris Fellow. I am saddened by his passing and shall remember him as an inspiration, a gentleman, and a friend. My husband, Einar, joins me in sending our deepest sympathies to the family.

My father thought the world of Nick Mamalakis, as did my entire family. My father and eventually my husband were in the Lions Club with Mr. Mamalakis, and I grew up knowing and respecting him for being one of the kindest gentlemen I've ever known. I saw him at the doctor's office just a couple months ago and he remembered my name immediately, saying he could never forget me. I was so excited to tell my parents, who are now 94. They were elated that we had shared a few minutes together with him. There are very few people of the character of Nick Mamalakis left in this world!

We both have known Nick since the 50's. He was a true gentleman, and it was always a pleasure to be around him. He fulfilled the words of Johnny Mercer - "You gotta accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative, latch on to the affirmative and don't mess with Mr. In-Betweeen."

The world was a better place because of Nick. He'll be missed by all who knew him.

My first memories of Nick centered around his friendship with my Dad. When Dad was called to active duty in the early sixties leaving a wife and six children Nick was one of a few kindhearted and gracious souls who looked after us. Later Nick and I became friends. He was a wise, loyal and trusted friend. I sense a terrible loss for us all especially for Mrs. Mamalakis, Elaine, Johnny and Dean. May Abraham bear Nick into his bosum and the Lord grant him eternal peace.

Nancy and I have your family in our thoughts and Prayers during these days. It was my great pleasure to get to know Nick through my in-laws, the Bainbridges. Herb always said Nick was one of the finest man he had ever known, and a great friend. He and Nell love your family very much. I told a frend this morning that when you think of Nick, the words "Southern Gentelman", come to mind. He was a wonderful man.

I had the pleasure of knowing him for many years and serving with him on a number of boards. His smile was contagious and beautiful. This community of Savannah which he loved so much should be grateful for having had him in our midst all these years.

We were so sorry to hear the passing of Mr. Mamalakis, He was such a wonderful man. One of my best memories is that everytime I would see him, he would always ask how my mother and dad were doing and my family. He was so personalble. He will be truly missed.

Mark Albertin

June 17, 2005

In 2003 I interviewed Nick for the documentary "Savannah Remembers". He was a true gentleman and a pleasure to speak with. He and his wife welcomed me into their home like I was an old friend. His memories and vast knowledge of Savannah were breath-taking and without his help our final video would have had many gaps. After the interview, Nick invited me to a wonderful lunch at the Savannah Country Club. Spending over two hours with me during the interview would have been plenty, but true to form and his generous nature he added this kind gesture.

I was proud to know this wonderful man. He will be greatly missed, but always remembered.
