Rest in peace Raghava Chettan! We will always remember you for the enthusiastic teacher, a dedicated scientist and the great human being that you were. As a distant cousin and fellow villager (28 years younger) in India, I grew up hearing great stories about your quest for knowledge. When I met you for the first time in person in Charleston, South Carolina many years later, I personally verified that everything I had heard about you is absolutely true. Additionally, I also learned that you are a great cook! We still make the delicious wine chicken curry using your recipe, and have not forgotten the emphasis you put on adding the nutmeg.
That you became a teacher in our brand-new village middle school soon after graduating high school and became Head Master of the school in 1946 at age 23 is written in the legends of the village. Elders in the village still remember you as kochhu saar (little teacher) because you were so young when you became a teacher. With your enthusiasm and the cooperation of village elders this school became a High School in 1953.
It is also legend that your constant pursuit of knowledge propelled you to further studies, a Ph.D. in science, and an academic career. You have told me several times that my late brother Govindan Nair was your favorite student. Because of you, my brother and I both pursued a career in education and science. Your penchant for education has provided impetus for the next generations in our village to pursue higher education and thus better lives.
When I met you for the last time in Portland, Oregon in 2016, I was once again impressed by your enthusiasm for everything academic. We will miss you dearly.
