Sage Brown Obituary

Attorney Sage Brown - SAVANNAH - On October 14, 1946, Sage Brown was born to King and Lula Bell Brown in Savannah, Georgia. He was the second of five children. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and brother-King Brown, Jr. On August 22, 2015, after over 68 years of service to his nation, community, family and friends, Attorney Sage Brown passed away after complications arising from what doctors purported to be Agent Orange related Leukemia. As a young man, Sage was an integral part of the youth force that fought for integration and the civil rights of African American citizens in the state of Georgia. In 1963, when the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools directed the integration of Groves and Savannah High Schools, the NAACP and the Chatham County Crusade for Voters identified him as one of the primary African-American students capable of taking on the daunting task. His training in civil disobedience coupled with his outstanding intellectual abilities made him a primary candidate for the integration of Groves High School. In June of 2015, the State Bar of Georgia and the Center for Civil and Human Rights, formally recognized Attorney Brown's efforts as part of the Celebration of Civil Rights Milestones in Atlanta, Georgia. Besides actively engaging in the Civil Rights struggle, Sage also answered the call to duty by serving his nation during the Vietnam War. During the period of May 1966 through March 1973, he served as an officer during three combat tours, including a thirty-month combat tour as a Infantry Rifle Platoon Leader. At the conclusion of his service, Sage had earned the rank of Captain, and was awarded a Bronze Star Medal (with one oak leaf cluster), a Purple Heart Medal, an Army Commendation Medal (with one oak leaf cluster), the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal (with nine bronze service stars), the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Training Service Medal 1st Class and the Combat Infantry Badge. Moreover, during the latter part of his military service, Sage attended school at night and completed requirements for a bachelor's degree in December of 1972. After being honorably discharged from the United States Army, Augusta College-now Georgia Regents University-conferred the degree of Bachelor of Business Administration to him in June of 1973. He also earned a Master of Business Administration from the Joint Graduate Center of Savannah State and Armstrong State Colleges in 1975. While serving as the Division Manager of Industrial Relations for the Woodlands Division of Continental Forest Industries, Sage earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the John Marshall Law School, and passed the Georgia Bar Examination during his first sitting in 1978. In addition, he was awarded the Nu Beta Epsilon National Law Fraternity's W. Reeves Lewis Award-an honor awarded to a student who most clearly reflects the high standards of the legal profession. Sage also used his talents to serve his community. For example, when the original founders of the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum experienced difficulties bringing the museum from concept to reality, community leaders, such as W. W. Law, called on Sage to execute the task. Sage took full control of all responsibilities and worked tirelessly for months planning, organizing, and implementing key requirements. On September 7, 1996, the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum opened; afterwards, Brown relinquished all duties and respectfully returned operational responsibilities back to community leaders. Attorney Brown continued serving the community by speaking to numerous adolescents and young adults about important life issues. He spoke at numerous community venues, including events in support of service members stationed at Hunter Army Airfield, in Savannah, Georgia. He also served as a long-time commentator for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade and as a key organizer of the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Desegregation of Public Schools in Savannah. He served as a member of the Chatham County Board of Registrars. He professed his faith at Mount Olive Holiness Church and later moved his membership to Connor's Temple Baptist Church. Attorney Sage Brown is survived by: his devoted wife Patricia McCoy Brown, D.M.D., seven children: Pheon Brown, LaVanda Brown, Sagdrina (Abdurrahim) Jalal, Sage W. Brown, Sage Brown, II and Tasagdra Brown; a special son Norman Solomon; fourteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren; two sisters, Linda V. Brown and Elizabeth Ann (Donald) Lemons, one brother, Gary Antonio Brown and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and devoted friends. Visitation: 5-7pm Friday at Connors Temple Baptist Church, 509 W. Gwinnett St. Funeral: 1pm, Saturday, August 29, 2015 at Jonesville Baptist Church of the P.A.W., 5901 Montgomery St., Bishop James Rodges, Pastor. Rev. Terrence Burrell, officiating. Burial: 12 Noon Monday, August 31, 2015 at Beaufort National Cemetery, Beafort, SC. with Military Honors. Mr Brown was my attorney when I was a young man and will always be one of the top 5 people that affected my life growing up.He allowed me to meet after hours in his office because of my work and would take his time and talk to me.
He set me straight about race, law and doing the right things.
I wish that I could have thanked him as an older adult for how much of an impact his love had on my life.
Thank you

I was employed by Sage Brown at his law firm. I worked there five years or so. We did some good things for people who needed someone in their corner. Today, I am an older man but I find myself remembering Sage for some of his comments to explain things in life. When I was two weeks into the firm, I won a dismissal of a gambling case at Recorder's Court. I was floating on cloud nine as I argued and won on a point of law. I told Sage about it. He congratulated me on my legal work. Later, he stuck his head inside my office and reminded me that we had more clients to help and he expected each of them to get the service from the firm. In time, his observations were adopted by me. I know my late Dad enjoyed Sage's company. As two senior partners, they talked about the travails of running a firm, an aging the fees, getting bills paid and still delivering top flight legal work. I miss Sage, would have liked to grow old together, talking about characters in Savannah we met, helped, kept out of jail. But his wit and wisdom lives on in those of us who knew him.

While I know that we all have to go home one day. I am sadden by the lose of Mr. Sage Brown. He was my attorney, my friend and a father to me when my own father wasnt there. I learned alot from this wise man and will never forget him. It is because of him and like he would say "the God that is working through him" that I have my children and my life today. Always professional. Always respectful. A genuinely decent human being. He will truly be missed. Thank you Mr. Sage Brown.

August 30, 2015

I was sadden by the news that Sage had passed away. As Christians we know that he is not lost but he is at home with The Father.
Sage and I go a long with back to 1963 with my brother Benjamin Van Clark We marched together. Went to jail together. He was a powerful force during that troubled time. Last saw him about five years ago when he visited me at my home in Maryland. We talked about old times and how far both of us had come from growing up poor in Savannah. I will always remember his hearty laugh compassion. So sorry to see him leave us so early but he is home where there is no more pain and he can sing as loud as he wants to sing. God bless his family.

I always took him for granted,
What I thought I'd never lose.
Because I never thought it would happen,
Until I heard the dreaded news.
Saying goodbye is never easy,
It's the hardest thing to do.
But what hurts me even more
Is not the chance to say it to you.
So today, Jesus, as you are listening
In your home above;
Would you go and find Sage Brown,
And give him all my love!

For those of us who live on Melinda Circle with Sage as our neighbor, his Christmas decorations were something that we all looked forward to. My grandchildren could not wait to come to our house at Christmas so that they could walk down to Mr. Sage's to see the lights. He was a good man! I am certain that he is now working on the Christmas lights for St. Peter!

My prayers and thoughts are with Attorney Sage Brown's family. I just want to say how much I admired this man. The first time I ever met him was in 1963 when he along with six other young people entered Groves High School. This man impressed me from day one. He was a gentle soul and believe me he and the others had to endure a lot at that time but they all handled themselves with grace and dignity. I never forgot Sage Brown. He made a comment that he wanted to become a lawyer way back then and he did! I just want his family to know what a difference he made in my life. To this day all my children, grandchildren, and great grands know about this man, Sage Brown. He truly is a hero. I know he will be missed. God Bless, Linda Goros and family
