Stewart Swords Obituary

Mr. Stewart Marvin Swords, 91, died Sunday, July 6, 2003 at Tara Rehabilitation Center in Thunderbolt, Georgia. Mr. Swords was born in Tifton, Ga., moving to Savannah at the age of 8-years-old. He retired from the Merchant Marines in 1982. Having served his country during the war, he received many commendations and medals including, the Pacific War Zone Bar, the Merchant Marine Defense Bar, the Mediterranean Middle East War Zone Bar, and the Merchant Marine Combat Bar. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. His wife of 58 years, Stella Cooler Swords, preceded him in death. Survivors: daughter, Delores Exley of Savannah; daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Talmadge Purcell of Midway; grandchildren and spouses, Dr. Keith and Tammie Purcell of Rincon, Chris and Tammy Hendley of Marion, Iowa, and Dr. Bob and Dr. Cynthia Silverio of Columbia, S.C.; six great-grandchildren, Kenneth, Michael and Kaitlyn Purcell, Taylor and Summer Hendley, and Julia Anne Silverio. Visitation: 6:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. Funeral Services: 11:00 a.m., Friday at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. Burial: Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. Active Pallbearers: Dr. Keith Purcell, Chris Hendley, Michael Purcell, Dr. Bob Silverio, Bobby Railey, and Talmadge Purcell.
