William Murphy

William Robert Murphy - WOODSTOCK - William Robert Murphy, 82, of Woodstock, passed away on Saturday, December 8, 2012 after an extended illness. He was born in Liverpool, New York to Robert William Murphy and Marie Erdine Gasser in 1930. He received his Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1952 and his Master of Aeronautical Engineering from New York University in 1957 and his Professional Engineering license from the State of New York. He moved to Hicksville, NY in 1952 to work for Grumman Aircraft Company. There he was instrumental in the design and development of the A-6 Intruder attack aircraft, and later the Gulfstream executive business jets with Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation in Savannah, Georgia. He cherished his time with his family and was an avid golfer and baseball fan. He was married to his beloved wife, Gwendolyn Mary Ofenloch, for 56 years. He is survived by his wife and his children and their spouses, Kevin Murphy and his wife, Rosamond, Dennis Murphy and his wife, Moira, Noreen Murphy Snellman and her husband, Stephen, Lynne Murphy Gere and her husband Richard and his grandchildren, Madalyn, Candace, Christopher, Ryan and Colin Murphy and Sydney, Caroline and Jackson Snellman and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sister, Mildred Murphy Croft. He and his wife were long-time members of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Woodstock, GA and recently of St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church in Roswell, GA. Family will receive friends at Northside Chapel, 12050 Crabapple Road, Roswell, GA on Tuesday, December 11 from 5:00-9:00 p.m. Repose will be at the Thomas A. Glynn & Son Funeral Home, 20 Lincoln Avenue, Rockville Centre, NY on Thursday, December 13 from 5-9 p.m. and Friday December 14 from 5-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 15 at 10 a.m. at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church, 129 Broadway, Hicksville, NY. Interment at St. Charles Cemetery, 2015 Wellwood Avenue, Farmingdale, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative, www.sarcomahelp.org.
