Jim was born in Rapid City, SD to T. W. and Mae (Russell) Oakes. He was raised in Iowa City, Iowa. He served five years in the United States Air Force at George AFB, Victorville. He married Claudia Sorenson 51 years ago, and was the father of two sons, Jack and Andrew. He worked for Kaiser Steel until it closed; then for California Steel until his retirement in 2008. He was a pipefitter by trade, an accomplished woodworker/furniture maker, avid mountain biker, fisherman, and a well-established organic gardener. His family was everything to him. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Jack, and brother, Greg. He is survived by his wife Claudia, son Andrew (Christy), daughter-in-law Judy, and grandsons, Adam (Dianna), Casey, Keenan, Soren and Curren.
A Celebration of Life Service was held June 27, and his interment service was July 7, at Riverside National Cemetery. The family would like to thank the countless numbers of friends and extended family who have been so supportive and kind during these past two months. You have truly blessed us!
