Randy Stein Obituary

Randy Stein
Born William Randolph Stein on March 7, 1953 in Pomona, Randy lost his valiant 4 year battle with Early Onset Alzheimer's on December 12, 2011. Randy graduated from Ganesha High School in 1971 where he was an outstanding athlete and was drafted in the first round by the Baltimore Orioles. He broke into the Majors in 1978 with the Milwaukee Brewers, and also played for the Seattle Mariners and Chicago Cubs. He then went on to climb to the highest levels in the Title Insurance business where he worked as a Vice President/Sales Manager for Stewart Title's LA Division. He was one of three children born to the late Don and Irene Stein. Randy married his high school sweetheart Patty (Delk) and was a loving husband for 36 years. Randy will forever be remembered by his beloved children, daughter Erica (Brian) Marlow, daughter Ashley (Danny) Hobbs and son Adam Stein, treasured Grandson Cameron Hobbs, devoted brother Ron (Renee) Stein and his loving sister Lisa (Rick) Winton, along with countless other family and friends whom were blessed to know him. Randy loved camping with his family in the High Sierra's and Glamis, hunting, soaking up the sun at the beach, riding his bicycle, being a prankster and eating M&M's. He never stopped being the husband and father his family loved. He was someone you could always depend on, and a friend to all who knew him. He was the life of the party. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 17 at 10:30 am, Community Baptist Church, 9090 19th Street, Rancho Cucamonga. To continue the family's fight against Alzheimer's disease donations can be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org.

I stumbled on an article he was named in and he was a favorite of mine for the Brewers as a kid. I was not aware he had passed, and at such a young age. My condolences to the family.

Randy & I were on the gymnastics and track team together at Ganesha High School. To say he was an outstanding athlete is an understatement in my mind. May God somehow grant your family some small measure of peace and comfort; you will be missed my friend.

It was a shock to read Randy's name in the list of baseball people we lost while I was catching up on the latest news of baseball. Myself and my wife Arlene have nothing but the fondest of memories of Randy and Patty as we were teammates in Milwaukee with the Brewers. I read all of the messages on the guest book and everyone reminded me of the joy and spirit Randy and Patty added to the team. They were special people that made those around them better in every way. I am not a religious person but I don't understand why a man like Randy who loved baseball so much, wasn't able to live out the dream to the full extent, or why God chose to take him so soon. Randy and Patty were a delight to be around and I am sure they continued to have the same impact on people around them after baseball. Our thoughts and prayers are with Patty and her family and we are touched with sadness hearing of Randy's passing.

Dear Patty & Family;
As a 5 year old living next door to Randy's friend Glen, he became a permanent structure around our home. Playing ball with my Dad who to this day will say "that boy could thorow a ball a block long" and even as a teen he made time to entertain us kids with his antics. Luckily I had the pleasure of knowing Randy for years, and later Patty. Being a teen I remained privledged enough to stay in contact as the primary babysitter for the James Delk family and watch the beginning of the Randy & Patty story. And what a beautiful pair you have been, and what a lucky duo to have shared this time together. Although no amount of time is ever enough with the people we love, the quality of that time is what matters. I wish you all comfort in this time and in the knowledge that Randy was an exceptional man and loved by everyone who knew him.

Patty I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Such fond memories I have of Randy, he will forever be a part of my history, and knowing he will no longer be here makes my heart heavy. I know he is in a better place and that we will all see him again some day... Randy, say hi to my dad for me...now you can sit around and make eachother laugh, from one jokester to the other...

As a sportswriter all my life, I started out covering the Rochester (NY) Red Wings. Randy and Patty became our very good friends. To know Randy is to never-ever forget him. He introduced me to Del Taco burritos in the late '70s and taught me how to go through life with a sense of humor. My now-grown daughters recall how they absolutely LOVED Randy! We all did. At this time of exordinary loss, my prayers go out to you, Patty, and your entire family. God Bless.

I had the pleasure of working with Randy at Stewart Title for 4 years. Randy was a fun loving person...always the jokester, I was one of many victims of his “sneak up and scare” tactic! But more importantly, Randy was such a genuinely nice guy…who always had a smile on his face and loved talking to people. I loved hearing his stories, especially from his days in baseball. I grew up being a Chicago Cubs fan, so it was always a treat whenever Randy would do his classic Harry Carey impersonation.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Patty and the rest of the Stein family. Randy will be greatly missed, but never forgotten!

Randy Stein died today?

That can't be, Randy Stein was a legend, a mythological figure, bigger than life.
At least from the eyes of a skinny sophomore shortstop. Which is exactly what I was. Randy Stein was a man among boys.

My recollection of Randy is from a game in which he matched up with a highly regarded pitcher from Chino High, one Ricky Green. The hype surrounding this game was over the top because both Stein and Green were projected to be high draft picks in the upcoming major league baseball draft. It was only a matter of which player would get picked before the other. The atmosphere was electric. This was the biggest thing to hit the Pomona Valley in a very long time. The stands were packed with fans from all over the valley and scouts from all over the big leagues. And I had a front row seat. That day Randy threw serious gas and Green mixed up his pitches like a veteran. I don't remember the final score but hits and runs were at a premium. It doesn't matter what the final score was, because this matchup was legendary.

Shortly thereafter it was announced during school that Randy had been the first round pick of the Baltimore Orioles(at that time one of the premier teams in major league baseball). "Are you serious, Randy Stein, from the same high school I attend, from the same baseball program that I play for!" you must be kidding!( by the way, Ricky Green was a second or third round pick by the Dodgers). We were all so proud.

Being a diehard baseball fan, I followed Randy's every career move through the minor leagues until the day he arrived in the majors. And of course, I went out to Angel Stadium when he came to town with the Milwaukee Brewers, to see him in a big league uniform of course. My friends and I were in awe. Randy Stein is a major leaguer!

Randy eventually left organized baseball. But the memory of those few years in the "bigs" have remained. Anytime Randy's named was mentioned, I would always think back to that day at Ganesha High.

I never really knew Randy. Never talked in the same circle with him at a party. But I have no doubt that he was a quality guy, because he married Patty Delk. Patty and I had a few classes together at Ganesha and she was always nice to me(probably tolerated me). She always carried herself with grace (Not an easy thing to do for a high schooler). So I've always believed that if Randy was lucky enough to marry Patty Delk, he must have been a good guy.

Vince Caporale.
