Clair Stoyer Obituary

Clair E. Stoyer passed away Jan. 24 at Las Vegas Desert Springs Hospital at the age of 88.

Born in Orwigsburg in 1927, he was a son of the late Claude and Elsie Dewald Stoyer. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Arvella Fisher.

After a stint in the Navy as a radar operator during World War II, he spent his working life managing the family business, Stoyer Pontiac Inc.

Clair spent his free time submerging himself in his love of politics.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church council, Schuylkill Lodge 138 and Lehigh Consistory and the Lions Club, and president of Orwigsburg Borough Council.

In 1982, at the age of 55, he sold the family business and eventually moved to the dry climate of Henderson, Nev., to deal with a painful back problem. He ran the local Home Owners Association for many year while enjoying, traveling, the sounds of the various slot machines, people watching, the lights of Las Vegas and, of course, following politics.

He is survived by his wife, LaVerne Scott Stoyer, to whom he was married 67 years; sons, Brian Stoyer and daughter-in-law, Cheryl Capps Stoyer, Painted Post, N.Y., and Martin Stoyer and daughter-in-law, Janet Minnich Stoyer, Auburn; a daughter, Pamela Gopsill and son-in-law, John, Henderson, Nev.; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

There will be a small family service in Henderson, Nevada. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the VFW (www.vfwfoundation.org/donate) in his memory. If you desire a card be sent to LaVerne, please use her address at Atria Sutton, 3185 E. Flamingo Road, Las Vegas, NV 89121, Attn: LaVerne Stoyer.

To the Stoyer family, my deepest sympathy. Just after I received my commission in the Army in 1966, my dad and I went to Stoyer's Pontiac in Orwigsburg where I bought a new 1966 Pontiac Executive. Mr. Stoyer sold great, good cars because that care lasted me 20 years and a quarter million miles.

To all of the Stoyer family you have our deepest regrets and sympathy. I remember Mr. Stoyer from when I would come over to play with Brian, Marty, and Pam as a kid and through H.S. He always impressed me as a very nice man, good husband, and good Father. May God show him peace, love and grace.
