James H. Smith, 74, of Barnesville, passed away Sunday, Aug. 22, at his residence.
He was born in Ryan Township on Jan. 27, 1947, a son of the late Howard B. and Ida (Hay) Smith.
Jim graduated from Mahanoy Area High School with the Class of 1965 and served in Korea with the Army during the Vietnam War. He worked as a self-employed contractor for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Shep Rivera, and a brother, Boyd Smith.
He is survived by his daughter, Pamela and her husband, Daniel Gerber, of Barnesville; nieces, Carmen and her husband, Roger Comley, and Tanya and her husband, Shawn Yates; nephews, John Rivera, Rick and his wife, Krista Rivera, Dan and his wife, Angie Rivera; several great-nieces and -nephews.
Jim was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Mahanoy City, the Schuylkill County Historical Society and the C.H. Berry American Legion Post 173, Tamaqua.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, at the White Church Cemetery, Rush Township, Tamaqua, with the Rev. Craig Zimmerman officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations to the Pottsville SPCA, 51 SPCA Road, Pottsville, PA 17901. Jane Clifford Ritz Funeral Home, Franklin R. Fetter, funeral director, Mahanoy City, has charge of the arrangements.

I just today learned today Nov 2nd, 2021of Jimmys passing. RIP Jim, my old friend. I spent summers in Barnesville and Jim and sister Nancy were friends even after marriage . I stopped in at times when visiting my Aunt Elva Bainbridge. Our prayers to family. Pam, the last time I visited your Dad was after his fall from the light pole. I knew Ida and Buddy Smith & family. Uncle Jim some of the best memories of my life were made up there with you guys! I am so thankful to have shared so many sweet memories from my childhood , as well as great times as an adult as well! You are and always will be one of a kind, big blow to the family losing you! This is a tough one to take. You will be so missed, love you always and God Bless his soul!!!
