Joseph D. Engle Sr., 81, of Girardville, passed away Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023, at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, Allentown.
Born May 29, 1942, in Girardville, he was a son of the late David and Anna (Meyers) Engle.
He was a 1959 graduate of the former Girardville High School and the Reading Area Community College, where he earned his degree in nursing (RN).
Joseph was an Air Force veteran.
He was a retired registered nurse, having been employed at the Wernersville Hospital and Berks County Prison. He was also a computer instructor at Berks Technical Institute. He and his wife, Mary, owned and operated Engle Enterprise. Joseph was a member of the Girardville Historical Society.
Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his son, Joseph D. Engle Jr.; two sisters, Catherine Colgan and Margaret Marquardt; and three brothers, Allen, Charles and Arthur Engle.
Surviving are his wife of 43 years, the former Mary Lombardo; two daughters, Karen Engle and Margaret Diggs; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Religious services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, at Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 S. Jardin St., Shenandoah, with the Rev. Fred T. Crawford officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in United Protestant Cemetery, Girardville. A viewing will be held from 9 until 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
