Margaret Whitaker Obituary

June 16, 2012

Margaret H. Hummel Whitaker, 72, of Ocean City, N.J., passed away June 16 at The Shores at Wesley Manor, Ocean City, N.J.

Margaret was born in and formerly of Pottsville, and had been a seasonal resident of Ocean City since the 1950s, vacationing during the summer months at her mother and father's summer home and has been a full time resident since 1978.

Ocean City has always been a special place for Margaret and her family. Family was always first and foremost in her life, and she always enjoyed when her children and grandchildren came to her home to enjoy the beach and ocean. Family was always in her thoughts and deeds and nothing was more cherished to Margaret than her five grandsons.

She had worked as an assistant dietician for Shore Medical Center, Somers Point, N.J., before her retirement in 1996.

Margaret was a member of St. Peter's United Methodist Church, where she belonged to the Mariam-Ruth Circle, and had served as a communion steward, a pew engineer and an usher.

She enjoyed her knitting group with friends and for missions.

Surviving are her daughter, Christine A. Whitaker, Pottsville; a son, James M. Whitaker and his wife, Mary Jo Hauptly, Queensbury, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Jason, Matthew John, Schuyler, Joseph, Matthew Alfred; a brother, Charles W. Hummel Jr., Pottsville; three sisters, Catharine E. Hoke, Lancaster, Elizabeth Estep, Tacoma, Wash., and Caroline Hummel, Wayne.

A Service of Memory and Love will be offered at 6:30 p.m. July 16 at St. Peter's United Methodist Church, Eighth Street at Central Avenue, Ocean City, where friends may call from 6 p.m. until the time of services. The family suggests those who desire send memorial contributions to Communion Stewards, c/o St. Peter's United Methodist Church, 501 E. Eighth St., Ocean City, NJ 08226. Godfrey Funeral Home, Ocean City, N.J., is in charge of arrangements. To email condolences, visit www.godfreyfunerahome.com.
