Faye Higgs Obituary

Faye Newbern

Higgs

Faye Newbern Higgs of Florence passed away on February 27, 2023, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after a brief illness surrounded by her loving family.

Born on May 19, 1943, in New Smyrna, Florida, Faye and her family soon moved to Fort Pierce where she graduated from Dan McCarty High School. It was here that Faye met the love of her life, Emery, who she dated throughout high school and married in 1962.

While raising three children, Faye realized that she wanted to do something where she could give back to the community and help others. She decided to enroll in the Florence-Darlington Technical College nursing program in her late-30s where she graduated with honors and then enjoyed a wonderful nursing career at Bruce Hospital and Carolina's Medical Center (now MUSC).

Faye enjoyed spending time in her garden, walking with friends, and seeing her grandchildren grow and prosper on the ballfield or on the stage.

Faye was a faithful member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Florence where she was found to support the various ministries of the church and was a proud member of the Friendship Sunday school class.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Emery, of 58 years; her parents, Wilba Colon and Allie Clyde Newbern, and her twin brothers, Harry and Larry Newbern.

She is survived by daughters, Mindy Higgs Taylor (Bill) of Florence and Missy Higgs Gore (Gene) of Conway; and son, Brian Higgs (Joy) of Florence; grandchildren, Brandon Iseman (Kayla) of Florence, Jordan Gore and Madison Gore of Conway, Allie Clyde Higgs and Ellison Higgs of Florence; and great-grandsons, Evan Gleason of Aynor, and John Luke Iseman and Jax Iseman of Florence; and sister, Ann Radlein of Cocoa, Florida; as well as a number of special nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the medical team at McLeod Regional Medical Center who assisted Faye during her illness.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 3rd at St. Paul United Methodist Church Family Life Center located at 1629 W. Palmetto Street in Florence beginning at 1 p.m. The funeral service will be held immediately following at 2 p.m., in the St. Paul United Methodist Church sanctuary with interment at Florence Memorial Gardens directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the McLeod Health Foundation Hope Fund, 300 S. Dargan Street, Florence, SC 29506.

So very sorry for your loss. Your sweet Mama and Daddy were such a force for good and strong girls/people as all of us were growing up and beyond. This world was just a better place because they were here. All of you will stay kept in prayer now and always.

Faye Higgs had so many attributes that I don´t have space to name all of them. She was loving, compassionate, selfless, kind, and thoughtful to name just a few. And she had a great sense of fun and adventure. She had the sharpest wit and could always make you laugh. My heart grieves for her family whom she loved unconditionally and I grieve knowing I can´t have anymore porch talks with her. She was a true friend and will be forever missed!!

I recall I was being prepped for surgery to have my wisdom teeth removed. I was high on the shot they had given me and was chattering loudly to the other patients in the room. I heard "Karan, you need to hush." I looked up and it was your mother! She of course told my parents who all thought it was funny. Faye was a sweet, kind woman and I know you were lucky to have her as a mother. May her memory be eternal.
