George Stukes Obituary

George William Stukes of Florence, SC, beloved husband, father, brother, and community leader, passed away suddenly on Sunday, May 26, 2024 at the age of 64. George was with Angela Stukes, his wife of thirty eight years, in Charleston, SC and near his cherished sailboat, Sea Share, when he passed away.

The son of the late Dr. Joseph Taylor Stukes and Courtney Randolph Stukes, of Florence was born in Maxton, NC. George was a proud resident of Florence where he enjoyed a long career as an Associate Vice President and financial advisor with Stifel. He served on the Board of Directors of the Bank of Clarendon and served as a former president of his family's timber business. A man of service and community, he was an active member of the Florence Rotary Club since 1995. He was a Paul Harris Fellow and the past president from 2002-2003 of the Florence Rotary Club. George was involved with the Florence Rotary Foreign Exchange Student Program and he and his wife hosted two foreign exchange students. George was also a member of Toastmasters for over thirty five years, a member and usher at Central United Methodist Church, and a proud member of the Charleston Yacht Club. He was a graduate of the College of Charleston and West Florence High School, where he was student body president. George and his wife enjoyed supporting the Florence Symphony Orchestra and the Florence Little Theater. George enjoyed sailing the Charleston harbor with his wife and friends on his sailboat, Sea Share, most weekends. George's greatest passion in life was his family; he dedicated his life and time spending it with his beloved wife, children, and grandson.

George is survived by his wife, Angela Jamison Stukes of Florence and Charleston, who stood by his side through every tide. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Dr. Taylor Mizell Stukes Duffin of Charlotte and Joseph William Stukes of Florence, and cherished a grandson, Reynolds William Duffin of Charlotte. George also leaves two older brothers, Taylor Hudnall Stukes (Kelly) and C. Randolph Stukes (Ruth), both of Atlanta; and many nieces and nephews. George also leaves behind two exchange student daughters, Anylú Zertuche Rodríguez of Mexico and Camille Rolin of Belgium.

He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Joseph Gordon Bonner Stukes.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 31st at Central United Methodist Church in Florence, SC at 11am. The family will receive visitors at Central United Methodist Church at 10am prior to the service where family and friends will gather to celebrate George's remarkable life. George's life was a testament to his love for family, community, and sailing.

Fair winds and following seas, George. You will be deeply missed.

I am very sorry to hear this and wish to express my deepest sympathy to George's family. I have known George for many years as my financial advisor and friend. My husband Johnnie trusted George with financial investments and spoke highly of his character. When my husband passed away 20 years ago, George was very kind to me and my family and vowed to continue looking after us. Over the last 20 years he remained true to his word and our friendship grew. I enjoyed hearing stories about his family, and I always recommended interesting books for him to read. I will miss him. You are in my prayers.

Dear Taylor and Randy,
I am so sorry to see this! Memories of us playing at Mrs. Georgia´s, which was behind my childhood home are still vivid in my mind. Also, my time spent with your parents in their home in Florence. May your many memories and the peace of God sustain you in the weeks to come.

To your dear family,
I enjoyed going to high school with George. He was always funny and kind and smart. I went on to Francis Marion and he went to Charleston. Though we both settled in Florence, we took different paths. I pursued journalism then motherhood and public relations. I moved to the beach and ultimately retired early to Nashville to be close to my daughters and their families. So, I haven´t kept up. But, I remember George and his family fondly. I am so sorry for your loss. You are in my prayers. -Denise
