James Keith Obituary

James Daulton Keith

October 8, 1942 - June 29, 2025

Charleston, SC - Dr. James Daulton Keith Jr., a respected periodontist, dedicated educator, and cherished member of the Charleston community, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2025, at the age of 82. Born October 8, 1942, in Hartsville, South Carolina, he was the son of the late James Daulton Keith Sr. and Annie Grace Campbell. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Vernon Keith.

Dr. Keith began his academic journey at Wofford College, graduating in 1961, and continued his studies at the University of Virginia and Boston College, where he laid the foundation for a distinguished career in dentistry. Dr. Daulton Keith had numerous memberships within the dental community, illustrating his deep commitment to the profession and its advancement. He was a member of the International College of Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Periodontology, the International College of Oral Implantology, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and The American Academy of Implant Dentistry. Additionally, Dr. Keith was an active participant in the South Carolina Dental Society, where he took on significant leadership roles, serving as Chairman of Continuing Education from 1980 to 1982, contributing to the Council on Dental Care Programs during two separate terms (1982-1984 and 1986-1988), and acting as Editor of the SC Risk Management Bulletin from 1985 to 1988.

As the founder of Periodontal Associates in Charleston, Dr. Keith was a pioneer in the field of periodontics and dental implantology. His weekly study club was a highly sought after invitation. His commitment to clinical excellence and patient care earned him a sterling reputation. Beyond his practice, Dr. Keith was a world-renowned lecturer and thought leader, sharing his knowledge at national and international forums and shaping the next generation of dental professionals. He traveled the world, from Bogota, Columbia, to Cape Town, South Africa, to Hong Kong and mainland China, to share his experiences and love of dentistry. One of his greatest joys was closer to home; he loved the faculty and students at The James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine where he taught for over forty years.

He will be remembered not only for his contributions to dentistry but for his deep integrity, intellectual curiosity, and the kindness he extended to all who knew him. Anyone who met him will likely remember a few of his corny jokes and the retelling of his African hunting stories.

Dr. Keith is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Harriet Keith; his children Gregory Keith (Shelley), Araby Ammons (Stephen), and Alex Keith Prince (Zach); and eight adoring grandchildren: Jacob Ammons, Daulton Keith, Reilly Keith, Grayson Ammons, Aidan Keith, Ada Prince, Lennon Prince, and Willa Prince. Also considered family, a special thanks goes out to James Johnson and Laquantus (La) Felder for their friendship and care.

In honor of his wishes, no service or memorial will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Dr. Keith's honor to MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital.

I´m so saddened about Daulton´s passing. My heart breaks for Harriet and the rest of the family. When I would go to Daulton´s office he always gave me a hug and then proceeded to tell me a funny off colored joke. I always got a kick out of him laughing at his own joke! The dental community has lost an awesome periodontist.

Condolences to the Keith family. My main man and friend, which saved me from myself in 1985. Always felt we traveled the world over in those seminars. I loved those corny jokes and always back at him with respect and love. May he rest in eternal peace. Thanks and see ya doc, one day.
