Raymond Hoppe, age 85, died peacefully Tuesday morning, November 27, 2012 in his home surrounded by his loving family.

Raymond Boniface Hoppe was born June 2, 1927 to Herman and Anna (Schaefer) in New Munich, Minnesota. He attended a local country school for 8 years and graduated from Melrose High School.

He married Laura Fuchs on June 5, 1951 at the St. Andrews Catholic Church in Greenwald, Minnesota. They met during a dance at the Spring Hill Ballroom. They first farmed at St. Nicholas for four years, then at Greenwald for two years before establishing their own farmstead at Freeport. There they raised their 8 children and farmed for 32 years. Ray and Laura retired from farming in 1989 and moved to New Munich. In those years they enjoyed playing cards and even went on to become great square dancers - 28 years of dancing. In his spare time, Ray enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ray was an avid farmer and even after retirement continued to help his children on their farms. Ray did custom combining for ten years and spent many summer months with his son, Larry, combining as far as Texas. Ray and Laura did a lot of traveling thru the years including Hawaii and Washington D.C. to visit their daughter, Marcie, who was stationed at various Air Force Bases. One of Ray's daughters, Lisa, participated in the German Foreign Exchange Program while in high school and traveled to West Germany where she became very good friends with her foreign exchange family. Thereafter, Ray and Laura traveled to West Germany three times to visit this foreign exchange family.

Ray is survived by his wife of 61 years, Laura: eight children: Larry (Bev) Hoppe of Osakis, Marcie (D'Mitch) Hoppe-Berrio, of Rosamond, California, June (Deacon Rick) Scherping, of Freeport, Herb (Carol) Hoppe, of Osakis, Mary Kay (Mike) Herkenhoff, of Freeport, Jim (Shelly) Hoppe, of Freeport, Rob (Kris) Hoppe, of Freeport, Lisa (Brent) Funk, of Albertville; 36 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren: one sister Philomene Kleinfehn, of Osakis, two brothers: Edmund Hoppe, of Blaine, and Alcuin Hoppe, of Jasmine, Illinois.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12:00 pm on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Freeport. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 30 from 4-9 pm at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Freeport. Parish Prayers will be at 5 pm. Visitation will also be held on Saturday, December 1, 2012 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Freeport. Inurnment will be at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in New Munich. Inurnment will be at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, New Munich.
