Andrew Nicol Obituary

KENSINGTON - Sgt. Andrew Cote Nicol, 23, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010, in Afghanistan from wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device.

Sgt. Nicol was leading a team of several U.S. Army Rangers during a tactical mission near the town of Kandahar when the device detonated, killing him and another American soldier.

He was raised in Kensington and was a 2006 graduate of Exeter High School, where he excelled at wrestling, placing sixth in the state championships his junior year. He was also active with the Boy Scouts and motocross competitions.

He is survived by his parents, Roland and Patricia Nicol of Kensington; his siblings, Roland and Alaina Nicol of Kensington and Lauren Zabierek of Arlington, Va.; his grandfather, Pasquale Emiro of Haverhill, Mass.; his grandmother, Marianne Nicol of Amesbury, Mass.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins residing in New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts.

WE REMEMBER: He had been living in Fort Mitchell, Ala., while assigned to the 3rd Battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Sgt. Nicol entered the United States Army immediately after high school and completed basic training at Fort Benning. He successfully completed Airborne and Ranger school and became part of the elite Army Rangers. During his tenure with the Rangers he completed four deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan prior to his most recent tour in Afghanistan.

In 2009 Sgt. Nicol was awarded the Bronze Star with V device for Valor and heroism during a raid in Iraq in which his unit killed six insurgents including the number-two leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq.

Due to his proficiency in combat, he rose to the position of team leader within the Rangers, leading up to 40 soldiers on tactical missions to hunt down enemy weapons caches and kill or capture enemy combatants threatening U.S. Forces and Afghan civilians. He was serving in this capacity when he died.

His awards and decorations include the Ranger Tab, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Expert Infantryman Badge and the Parachutist Badge.

He was also awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Combat Star, Iraq Campaign Medal with Combat Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon and Overseas Service Ribbon.

He was posthumously awarded his second Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and Purple Heart.

His family will remember him as a dedicated and brave young man who gave his life for his country, family and fellow Rangers without regard for himself.

SERVICES: Calling hours will be held Tuesday, Aug. 17, from 4 to 8 p.m. in Holy Family Parish Church, 2 School St., Amesbury.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Aug. 18, at 10 a.m. in Family Parish Church.

Burial will be in the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wounded Warriors Project, WWP National Processing Center, P.O. Box 758516 Topeka, KA 66675.

To the family and friends of Sgt Andrew Nicol,
Although I didn't have the privilege or honor of knowing Andrew, I wanted to let you know that I will be participating in a GORUCK event on Aug 7th and 8th in Portland, ME. Each participant of this event will be selecting a SOF who was KIA on those dates sometime in the past. We will each share information about them to the group so that their memories will continue to live on. It will be my pleasure to pay tribute and share Andrew's story.

I know there are no words to say at this time, except how sorry that I am. I truly feel your loss and pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you always. Andrew will never be forgotten.

For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.
I know you’re in God’s presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.

I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

I salute you .

To the family:
May the comfort from family and friends continue to strengthen you, and may you find comfort in the words found in the Holy Scriptures: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to our Brother-in-Arms Sgt. Andrew Nicol To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Andrew. And to Andrew it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Andrew, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,335 military Legionnaire Veterans of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Andrew’s family and loved ones.
