Arthur Fortier Obituary
EXETER — Arthur Joseph "Joe" Fortier Jr., 78, died Monday, April 28, 2008, in Exeter Hospital after a brief illness.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving from 1948-1952 and it was during this time that he began his 54-year career as a barber.
After a short stint at a barber shop in Hampton, Mr. Fortier opened Joe's Barber Shop at 4 Center St. in Exeter in October of 1953.
Over the years, the shop moved to other locations throughout Exeter before settling at the current place of business at 111 Water St.
He is survived by his wife, Olga (Nichypor) Fortier; three daughters, Cynthia A. Fortier of Portsmouth, Va., Lisa A. Fortier of Memphis, Tenn., and Nancy A. Batchelder and her husband Robert of Exeter; two grandchildren, Brenden and Kaleigh Batchelder; two sisters, Sr. Charlotte Ann Fortier of Windham and Beverly A. Hamilton of Hudson, and several nieces and nephews.
WE REMEMBER: He was born August 27, 1929, in Exeter, the son of the late Arthur J. Fortier Sr. and Annie M. (Denoncour) Fortier.
He was a 1947 graduate of Tuck High School in Exeter.
He married Olga (Nichypor) Fortier on July 3, 1955, and visited her regularly for the last four years at Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood.
Mr. Fortier was well known in the community as the consummate old-fashioned barber. He had many regular customers who for 30 to 40 years were in need of a standard plain-old hair cut in a barbershop environment.
A communicant of St. Michael Church in Exeter, he was a member of the Newton Gun Club and Exeter Sportsman Club. An avid fisherman and lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, he was a skilled target shooter.
He enjoyed working in his vegetable garden and was well known for his luscious tomatoes.
SERVICES: Calling hours will be held Sunday, May 4, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, May 5, at 10 a.m. in St. Michael Church, corner of Front and Lincoln streets, Exeter. Private burial with military honors will be in Exeter Cemetery.
