Chris Connors Obituary

Irishman Dies from Stubbornness, Whiskey

Chris Connors died, at age 67, after trying to box his bikini-clad hospice nurse just moments earlier. Ladies man, game slayer, and outlaw Connors told his last inappropriate joke on Friday, December 9, 2016, that which cannot be printed here. Anyone else fighting ALS and stage 4 pancreatic cancer would have gone quietly into the night, but Connors was stark naked drinking Veuve in a house full of friends and family as Al Green played from the speakers. The way he died is just like he lived: he wrote his own rules, he fought authority and he paved his own way. And if you said he couldn't do it, he would make sure he could.

Most people thought he was crazy for swimming in the ocean in January; for being a skinny Irish Golden Gloves boxer from Quincy, Massachusetts; for dressing up as a priest and then proceeding to get into a fight at a Jewish deli. Many gawked at his start of a career on Wall Street without a financial background - but instead with an intelligent, impish smile, love for the spoken word, irreverent sense of humor, and stunning blue eyes that could make anyone fall in love with him.

As much as people knew hanging out with him would end in a night in jail or a killer screwdriver hangover, he was the type of man that people would drive 16 hours at the drop of a dime to come see. He lived 1000 years in the 67 calendar years we had with him because he attacked life; he grabbed it by the lapels, kissed it, and swung it back onto the dance floor. At the age of 26 he planned to circumnavigate the world - instead, he ended up spending 40 hours on a life raft off the coast of Panama. In 1974, he founded the Quincy Rugby Club. In his thirties, he sustained a knife wound after saving a woman from being mugged in New York City. He didn't slow down: at age 64, he climbed to the base camp of Mount Everest. Throughout his life, he was an accomplished hunter and birth control device tester (with some failures, notably Caitlin Connors, 33; Chris Connors, 11; and Liam Connors, 8).

He was a rare combination of someone who had a love of life and a firm understanding of what was important - the simplicity of living a life with those you love. Although he threw some of the most memorable parties during the greater half of a century, he would trade it all for a night in front of the fire with his family in Maine. His acute awareness of the importance of a life lived with the ones you love over any material possession was only handicapped by his territorial attachment to the remote control of his Sonos music.

Chris enjoyed cross dressing, a well-made fire, and mashed potatoes with lots of butter. His regrets were few, but include eating a rotisserie hot dog from an unmemorable convenience store in the summer of 1986.

Of all the people he touched, both willing and unwilling, his most proud achievement in life was marrying his wife Emily Ayer Connors who supported him in all his glory during his heyday, and lovingly supported him physically during their last days together.

Absolut vodka and Simply Orange companies are devastated by the loss of Connors. A "Celebration of Life" will be held during Happy Hour (4 p.m.) at York Harbor Inn on Monday, December 19.

In lieu of flowers, please pay open bar tab or donate to Connors' water safety fund at www.thechrisconnorsfund.com.

December 14, 2019

I dated Chris for about a year and a half; on a blind date. I was in anesthesia school in quincy at the time. He was a joy; great sense of humor and looks! I've never met someone who has bluer eyes than myself. Thought of getting in touch after my divorce but figured he was happy with his family! So sorry for his huge family! His memory will be tucked away in my heart forever! Sincerely, Pamela Goodwin/Peaslee

I too came to this obituary after reading Lisa Genova's book, "Every Note Played".
My husband was diagnosed with ALS on May 26, 2016. I still have the honor of his presence in my life and continue to appreciate and celebrate his gift of life for as long as God is willing. Thank you for your inspiration Chris.

Lisa Genova encouraged me at the end of her book, Every Note Played, to read your obituary. My first thought was that I wish I had known you, but I quickly realized that in a small way I did through reading today. I know those who knew you in the truest sense of the word must still miss you every day, but they carry your spirit in their hearts. Godspeed...

We are very sorry for your loss. At times of hardship, the common advice you may hear is simply "move on." But move on to where? We can find comfort in the Lord's prayer in Matthew 6:10 - "Let your kingdom come." This Kingdom is real, and it brings comfort when we understand the blessings it will bring.

Though it seems the world has lost a heck of a man - which saddens me beyond belief for his loved ones - it is nevertheless a reminder to those of us still alive to live your life to the fullest, to take a leaf (or two) out of Mr Connors' book and live a life worthy of such an obituary. Thank you for being such a presence in this world - though I have never met you, you are an inspiration to me.

Rest in peace, legend :)

I am sorry for your loss, although I feel it is temporary... One day we will have the answers and hopefully be reunited once again. (Yes I am a dreamer..what else do we have, really). December 20, 2016

My condolences to the extended Connors family.
I would like to share a story with you about some advice that Chris gave me that had great impact on my athletic career. As a little background, my family had just moved from Dorchester to Ellington Road in Quincy two doors down from the Connors. I was around ten years old at the time. Doug and his friends were around fourteen, so they were the big kids and his older brothers were the really big kids.
One day Kevin and Chrissie Connors were throwing a football around in front of their house when they summonsed me and a few other neighborhood lads to play touch football in the street.
Being the little guy, I was stationed on the line to cover the QB. Kevin was my target and I remember him being lanky, quite nimble and able to avoid my QB rush at will. Chris called a huddle and looked me in the eye and in the only sentence that he ever directed to me, before or after that game he said; Watch his belt buckle and whichever way his buckle goes, you go! With that, I became quite a nuisance to Kevin that game and kept him somewhat in check.
Although I did not play at NQHS, I did play in the Boston Park Football League for the South Boston Chippewas for several years and then in the Dorchester Flag Football League for many more. That advice on how to track the ball carrier served me well and I would always pass it along to the new guys who may have been struggling and later to my own sons.
Like Chris, I also enjoy Veuve and will toast him the next time we pop a bottle!!
One last sad note that your family may not be aware but there were three victims on 9/11 with direct ties to Ellington Road in Quincy. Along with your Uncle Kevin, Susan (McAleney) MacKay grew up across the street from the Connors at 43 Ellington Road, worked for TJX and was on American Flight 11. In addition, the Healy family from 53 Ellington Road lost an uncle who was a Catholic priest. God bless them all!!

From one Irishman to another, no sendoff would be complete without a limerick, so here goes:

Without equal was his bucket list.
For a slight man he swung a mean fist.
To the end he drank whiskey.
With his nurse he got frisky.
By the booze industry he'll be missed.
