Coleman Hogan Obituary

ATLANTIS, Fla. - Coleman F. "Colie" Hogan, 93, died peacefully Monday, Sept. 6, 2010, at his home, after a long illness. He was a man of high integrity, generosity and loving kindness.

He was raised in South Boston, the second of 11 children of Patrick and Annie McKeon Hogan of Ireland, and had resided in Atlantis for the past 20 years.

Mr. Hogan continued his higher education by attending night school and graduated from Bentley College in 1942 and received his degree in accounting from Northeastern University in 1952.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy (O'Rourke) Hogan; 10 of 11 children from a previous marriage, Paul of Massachusetts, Jim of Vermont, Ann Marie Evans of Massachusetts, Mary Toye of Georgia, Bob of Illinois, Tom of New Jersey, Ed of Connecticut, Alice Hogan of New York, Brian of Turks & Caicos and Kevin of Zurich, Switzerland; 18 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, William of Boston; and one sister, Agnes of Boston.

WE REMEMBER: He was a U.S. Air Corps veteran of World War II, rising in rank from private in 1942 to captain in 1946. At the end of the war, as resident auditor of the New England Region of the Army Air Corps, he was responsible for audits of terminated war contracts as industry converted from a wartime to a peacetime economy.

He went on to forge an illustrious career in private industry and held various accounting and financial management positions in Boston and New York from 1939 to 1961, including controller of Walworth Company and treasurer of the Sucrest Co. In 1961, he became president of Davidson Rubber Co., Dover, N.H. In 1965, one year after Davidson was acquired by McCord Corporation of Detroit, Mr. Hogan became chairman and chief executive officer of the company. McCord became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ex-Cell-O Corporation of Troy, Mich., in 1978. He retired as CEO of McCord in 1982.

He continued to serve on Ex-Cell-O's board of directors as chairman of the Finance and Planning Committee and started Hogan Associates to manage his personal and family investments and to provide financial and management counsel.

He served as a member of the finance committee and trustee at Exeter Hospital and was chairman of its annual fund drive; was a member of the finance committee and an associate trustee of Holy Cross College; a member of the National Council of Northeastern University; president of the parish council of St. Michael Church in Exeter; and an advisor on the development of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in 1961 for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Manchester.

He was a recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Bentley College and the prestigious Founder's Day Award from Phillips Exeter Academy.

He was a devout Catholic and family man. His first wife, Peg, died of a heart attack in 1985. They had 11 children. He remarried in 1989 to longtime family friend Nancy O'Rourke.

He was a generous supporter of educational, religious and charitable concerns. He was a genuinely spiritual man who had a profound belief that his fortune was bestowed upon him by Almighty God to use in helping others, especially those less fortunate than he. He donated time and money to many causes and charities and established scholarships in every college his children attended in memory of his son, Larry, who was killed in combat in Vietnam.

SERVICES: Calling hours will be held Friday, Sept. 10, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 11, at 10 a.m. in St. Michael Church, Exeter. Military burial will follow in Exeter Cemetery.

Flowers are acceptable, or memorial donations may be made to Camp Fatima, P.O. Box 226, Concord, NH 03301; Scripps, Florida Alzheimer's Research, 130 Scripps Way, Jupiter, FL 33458; Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 100 Lantana Road, Lantana, FL 33462; or to the charity of one's choice.
