Martin Moy Obituary

RYE - Martin Kwong Moy, 92, of Rye, died Monday, Feb. 15, 2010, at Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

He was born in Boston, the first son of Col. William and Rose Lee Moy. His grandparents were from Canton, China.

As was the custom, he was sent to China for eight years of education, graduating from the Lingnan Middle School. He served the required military duty in China and then returned to the U.S., where he attended Tilton Junior College, M.I.T., and graduated from Boston University, majoring in accounting.

He worked for Raytheon for 33 years and also served as an accountant for various Chinese restaurants in Boston and the Seacoast.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a brother, Wesley Moy and his wife, Kay, of Long Island, N.Y.; two stepsons, Brian G. Powell and his wife, Rebecca, of Lynchburg, Va., and Barry M. Powell and his wife, Lea, of York, Maine; stepchildren Fletcher, Julia, William, Jonathan, Audrianna, and Powell; and nephews.

WE REMEMBER: Martin was baptized, confirmed and married in Christ Episcopal Church in Portsmouth. He married Pat Powell on Oct. 10, 1977, at the young age of 60. He also served as treasurer and volunteered tirelessly for Little Blessings Preschool and Daycare Center. He is fondly remembered for arriving early to make the coffee for coffee hour.

He was devoted to Portsmouth Regional Hospital, where he received the Frist Humanitarian Award. He logged more than 12,500 hours in the past 15 years by serving not only in the Senior Friends Program (h2u), but also in the marketing department, mailroom, and the cashiers office. He once acted as an interpreter for a Chinese family in the delivery room.

His volunteer work extended in many directions, including taking tax courses through AARP in order to help individuals prepare their income taxes, collecting newspapers for donation to the SPCA, volunteering at a local bakery, and donating bread and cookies to different charities.

SERVICES: A celebration of Martin's life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at Christ Episcopal Church, 1035 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor may be made to Christ Episcopal Church.
