Maynard Young Obituary

RYE — Maynard Lindsey Young Jr., 84, beloved husband of Joan (Brody) Young, died Sunday, June 28, 2009, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Mr. Young was born Sept. 24, 1924, in Rye, the son of Henrietta (Blow) Young and Maynard L. Young, Sr. He grew up in the house where he was born and attended Rye schools.

Mr. Young's greatest joy was his family. Besides his wife Joan, he leaves his daughter, Holly and her husband, Kerry Plaisted, of Nottingham; sons Christopher and fiancée Louisa, of Merrimack, Jeffrey and his wife, Pam, of Newmarket, and Timothy of Rye; one stepson, Scott Dennett and his wife, Barbara, of Newfields; stepdaughter Miriam Stanton of Owing Mills, Md.; and nine grandchildren. He also is survived by his nieces, Sharon Jubrias of Seattle, Wash., and Joann Williams of Winter Harbor, Maine, and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his son, Jason Arthur Young; and his two sisters, Constance and Marilyn.

WE REMEMBER: He graduated from Northeastern University with a bachelor of science degree in 1950. He operated his own painting contracting business for 44 years, and his company painted several landmarks in the New England area, including the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge in Portsmouth, the Bucksport Bridge in Bucksport, Maine, and the Deer Isle Bridge in Maine.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-45, and was instrumental in updating the Rye War Memorial in Rye Center with the names of World War II veterans. His name stands along with his father's on the memorial.

Mr. Young was active in local politics and education. He served on the Rye Board of Selectmen from 1983-86 and the Rye Planning Board for nine years. He was president of the Rye Parents/Teachers Association (PTA) and was a life member of the New Hampshire PTA.

He was treasurer of the Rye Congregational Church Building Fund committee, and served on the church's board of wardens. He also was a member of its executive building committee.

Mr. Young was elected to the N.H. House of Representatives where he served from 1963-64. He sponsored two bills, one calling for the re-examination of older drivers and the second to always have Route 1A remain under the jurisdiction of the state of New Hampshire.

He was a member of St. Andrew's Lodge #56 F.&A.M., of Portsmouth, and a member of the Scottish Rites Bodies, Valley of Portsmouth and Dover. He was a 32nd degree Mason and Potentate Adjutant of the Alleppo Temple of Boston.

He was a founding member of the Rye Ambulance Corps and served as its president. He was a 15-year member of the Portsmouth Lions Club and served on the Rye School Board, and was chairman for two years. He was chairman of the Supervisory Union 21 Nominating Committee and was chairman of the Rye for N.H. Marine Memorial Committee.

He was formerly a member of the Wentworth by-the-Sea Golf Club and Portsmouth Country Club. He was a primary fundraiser for his son Jason's scholarship endowment each year, culminating in 14 years of golf tournaments held at Candia Woods Golf Club.

He loved his family. He looked forward to Sunday night meals at his daughter's house, stopping in at his sons' houses to check on the grandchildren, and taking drives with his wife. They loved saltwater taffy and would go on adventure rides looking for maple syrup or fresh apples.

He never left the town he loved as well. Rye was home to him for 84 years. He knew every inch of it, and most of the people who lived there. He always shared his opinion, but always listened to others. He will be missed by all who knew him.

SERVICES: A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Rye Congregational Church, 580 Washington Road, Rye. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Maynard's memory to the New Hampshire SPCA, P.O. Box 196, Stratham, NH 03885-0196, or to the Jason Young Memorial Scholarship Endowment, c/o NH Charitable Foundation, 37 Pleasant St., Concord, NH 03301. Dear Joan,
My Dad, Weston F. Cook Sr., and Maynard were fellow Masons, active together in Retired Military groups, and just pals. Growing up, I remember "Mr. Young" [the name I was allowed to call him] very well. He was open-minded, sharp witted, and very, very funny. He was a good man and a true "Rye guy" who loved our town so very much. May God give rest to him and peace to you and all of yours. Warmest. Weston

Dear Joan,
We are so sorry to hear about Maynard's passing. We were out with Gloria tonight when we heard the news. We will miss him. We will miss the neighborly conversations with him in the back yard or out front while crossing paths. Our thoughts are with you and your family. Sincerly, Tony Fournier and Joanne

Dear Joan,
I am so sorry that I could not be with you after the service. I have known Maynard all of my life and can still envision him as a young man socialising around Carberry's Store when I was just a kid.The memories go on and on-the apartment building being purchased from Tom and Edith Hill.
In my heart, I feel as though something is permanently missing from the Town of Rye. I will miss him and please know that both of you are in my thoughts and prayers. Ned Tate
