Nancy Rhoades Obituary
She graduated from Marblehead, Mass., high school in 1944 and Salem Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. She worked at the Bronx Veterans Hospital in New York until 1951.
She was married to Earl J. Rhoades MD and then moved to Conn., and raised her family in New Haven and then Woodbridge, Conn. After the kids moved out, she and her husband, moved to Orange, Conn. and then to New Durham, N.H. to be closer to one of her sons.
For the last 15 years of her life she moved into Webster at Rye Senior Independent living and the assisted living at the same facility. She quickly realized it was a good move for her later in life as she found good friends there in the residents and all the employees. It was the intimate friendly atmosphere that she needed and that proved even more wonderful at the end of her life.
She was a dedicated homemaker and mom and enjoyed very active involvement in church. This involved being a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader and president of a Women's Aglow Fellowship.
She was predeceased (1996) by her husband Earl and her sister Carolyn Merriam and brother Robert Hamond. Surviving are her three children, David Rhoades of Hendersonville, N.C., Peter Rhoades of Madbury, N.H. and Barbara Rhoades of Duxbury, Vt., and step son Earl J. Rhoades Jr. of Asheville, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
SERVICES: A celebration of Nancy's life will be held at the family cottage at 10 Bennett Rd., New Durham on Sunday, October 27, from 1-4 p.m.
Her hospice care was from Cornerstone VNA and was excellent. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to them at: www.cornerstonevna.org.

I was not aware Nancy had died. I have such fond memories of all of us camping together, especially her driving that huge trailer. She will be missed.

Dear David, Peter and Barbara,
I just learned of your mom's passing and wanted to let you know how sorry my father, Ian Isdale, and I were to learn of your loss. Nancy's birthday was in my dad's calendar for the year and we had been speaking of her and your father just this past week! I will always remember your parents with fondness, not the least of which was your wonderful mom making me a birthday cake one year. Your parents came over for Christmas dinner in Orange and my mother had, with the bustle of the day, forgotten to make me a birthday cake (the woes of a Christmas baby!). In walks your mom with a beautiful cake in the shape of an open book - perfect for the avid reader that I was! They both insisted it was not pre-planned. Regardless, it remains a cherished memory and I have so many others of wonderful meals with your parents. The church offered a great community and they were well loved by many. Dear David, Peter and Barbara,
I just learned today the news of your mom's passing. She was one-of-a-kind, and the love and care she showed to my parents (Ada and Tom Bell) was a true blessing to them ..and to us. I spoke to your Mom just a few months ago; how fortunate I was to hear her upbeat voice; it had, per usual,'laughter' in it. As a family we were so lucky to have met such quality, kind people in Orange, CT - especially through the Orange Congregational Church. Condolences to all of you. Deepest sympathy to David, Peter and Barbara Jean. I loved your mom. She was the best neighbor a kid could ever have. Especially loved her baking ability and endless surprises on our porch. Every year we pay tribute to her by making the infamous Mrs. Rhoades Xmas and Easter cookies. My mom and I enjoyed are annual trip to NH to visit her and she is sadly missed.
