Paul Hussey Obituary

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — Paul Hussey Sr., 89, of 25 Great Hill Road in South Berwick, died Saturday, April 19, 2008, surrounded by his family at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, after a brief illness.

Paul will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by those that survive him: His wife, Elsie; daughters, Jeanne Smith and her husband, Bob, of Orangeville, Pa., and Susan Howard her husband, James, of South Berwick; sons, Paul Hussey Jr. and his wife, Mary, of South Berwick, and Peter and his wife, Linda, of South Berwick; his sisters and brothers, Madeline Lilly of South Berwick, Gerald Hussey and his wife, Priscilla, of Mims, Fla., Martha Abbott of North Berwick, Kathleen Keelty and husband Thomas of Somersworth, Phyllis Clark of Tacoma, Wash., and John Hussey. Paul had 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two infants, Paul and Carolyn; brothers Charles and Edgar; sister Rachael; as well as a granddaughter, Tanya Lee Hussey.

WE REMEMBER: He was born in Berwick on Nov. 4, 1918, son of the late Charles L. and Martha (Goodwin) Hussey. Paul resided in South Berwick his entire life. He attended and played football at Berwick Academy. Paul married Elsie (Foley) Hussey, his wife of nearly 61 years, on Nov. 22, 1947.

Paul served with the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945 in the South Pacific with the 268th Coast Artillery Battalion. He was a life member of the VFW and the American Legion Post 47. He had a very strong work ethic, retiring only in recent years from the business he owned and operated for 50 years, Hussey Septic Service. In his younger years he had a passion for motorcycles that he shared and enjoyed with his brother Jerry. He was a man of many talents and enjoyed raising beef and fishing. His garden was one of his greatest pleasures. He also loved a good game of cards, playing pool with the guys, and his ritual of having coffee at 5:30 every morning with his friends. Paul (Papa) was the foreman of the family gravel pit, and loved watching the guys work out of the pit. He had a passion for nature and could tell you anything about a bird, berry or animal.

He took great pride in his family, and enjoyed having them gather on the "hill." He especially enjoyed and looked forward to the weekends and other times spent with a very special grandchild, Tori Lin Hussey.

SERVICES: At Paul's request, a private graveside service will be held in Woodlawn Cemetery. To celebrate Paul's life, the family would like to invite family and friends at 1 p.m. on Saturday to the home of Paul Hussey Jr. and his wife, Mary, at 46½ Agamenticus Road in South Berwick. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the South Berwick Rescue Squad, or to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Arrangements are under the direction of the McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick. Go to www.mcintiremccooey.com to sign the online guest book.

Paul Hussey has always been a strong silent hero to the rest of us. Hard work, honesty, forthrightness: these were among his virtues. I have always said that people like him were the ones who made America great. Yes, he loved his family and friends. He loved his community. He also loved the wildlife who shared this earth. He will be missed by the rest of us, but will always be remembered for his strength and good example.

I just learned today that Paul Sr. had passed. My father, who has long since passed himself, was very fond of Paul. They had many a card game together. I remember many times as a teenager that Paul stopped and gave me a ride home from town in his work truck. I enjoyed our conversations during these rides. I will always remember him as a hard working and kind man. My sincerest condolences to all of his family and friends.

I've known all the Pauls's - Sr, jr and the third. So sorry to hear of Pauls passing. I've known him forever, remember when he pulled my Mom and our 1956 Ford out of the mud toward Thurell rd many years ago as we went on our save the world trip.
Paul jr and I played sports together, tho he was much better at sports than I was - and Brian III hung around with my son Bryan.
Bottom line - My thought and prayers are with you all. Peace.

Paul, Peter & The entire Hussey Family. We will be with you at these trying times in our prayers and in our thoughts. Your dad was a very good friend. I can remember in th 50's how he plowed snow for us on the mountain, how he hauled many loads of lumber for my dad. In the time since he retired, we had many opportunities to talk about the good "old" times at Mayos. Paul lived a very full life and had a positive attitude. I am sure his memories will live on forever.

Dear Elsie, Jean, Susan, Paul, and Peter;
Our families are very close, having been neighbors our entire lives, you're like part of the family. There is always a special place in our hearts for each of you. I couldn't begin to count the many experiences we've all had with Paul, Sr., and now you four kids. Knight's Pond was a favorite swimming place for us older folk when we were kids and the Husseys lived where my brother now lives. So many fond memories from then and along the years. All of you along with Paul are in my thoughts and prayers.

Mr. Hussey was a very helpful man. I remember him, when I lived in Barrington. I had some problems with my Septic System, I called him, and he came to my home immediately. I will always remember what a fine gentleman he was, and how he helped my situation. God bless the family of Mr. Huppe. I'm sure he will be missed greatly.

Paul:
Your Dad was very proud of you and your siblings and though I know only you, I'm confident that you exemplify everything he stood for along with your Mom. Hard for me to believe that he wasn't at a game or two watching his grandsons carry on the proud Hussey legacy on the ballfield.
Please know that my thoughts are of you and your family always, but especially during these tough times.

Paul(Papa)Hussey, I met this man in 2000 shortly after buying my house which was built buy his grandson. He and I formed a friendship immedialy because of my passion for hunting. I would stop to talk to him when ever I got a chance. He had a great knowledge of the area and its history. We would discuss what or if he or I had seen anything in the area for wildlife. Every year I would share my venison with him and his son Pete.My son Chance shot his first deer of Pops hill and I shot a few myself. His wife Elsie... there sons and several of his grandchildren I am proud to say are my freinds. Godbless you all!
