Theodore Downs Obituary

PORTSMOUTH — Theodore R. "Ted" Downs Jr., 79, husband of Audrey (Butler) Downs of 235 Marcy St., died Saturday, May 31, 2008, at the Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center in Dover.

Mr. Downs was born Aug. 26, 1928, in Portsmouth, the son of the late Theodore R. Sr. and Elizabeth (Knowlton) Downs.

He attended Portsmouth schools and was a former member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth.

In addition to his wife of 57 years, survivors include his sons, T. Richard Downs of Kittery, Maine, and Galen T. Downs of Portsmouth; a daughter, Deborah K. Downs of Portsmouth; his grandsons, Timothy Downs and Jared Downs, both of Kittery; three great-granddaughters, Cheyla, Alyssa and Clover Downs of Kittery; a brother, Richard Downs of Sheboygan, Wisc.; a sister, Gloria Barnes of Portsmouth; a niece and goddaughter, Donna Michaud of Barrington; and several nieces and nephews.

A sister, Dorothy Oliver, predeceased him in 1996.

WE REMEMBER: Ted was employed for 18 years as a machinist supervisor for Fiber Tex, formerly of Portsmouth, and was a commercial truck driver for Colonial Service of Portsmouth for more than 20 years, retiring in 1985.

After retiring, he worked for the Portsmouth School Department as a custodian at the Little Harbor School until 1993.

He was a member of the Loyal Order of MOOSE #444 of Portsmouth; a member of AARP and a former member of AFSCME.

Ted was a very congenial man and had a ready smile for all. He had a passion for ballroom dancing and a love of wild birds.

SERVICES: Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 2, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home — Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. MOOSE services will be held Monday evening during visitation.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, at the funeral home with interment to follow in the Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth.

Friends are invited and flowers will be accepted.
