William Smyser Obituary
A U.S. Foreign Service officer after military service, Dr. Smyser was involved in many history-changing events of the Cold War, including President Kennedy's visit to the Berlin Wall in 1963, and Henry Kissinger's top-secret mission to China in 1971 to restore diplomatic ties. He was Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees of the United Nations from 1981-1986, and later taught at the BMW Center of Georgetown University for 18 years. He wrote ten books and numerous articles on political, economic and humanitarian issues.
A long-time resident of New Castle, he is survived by his wife, Sally Horner Smyser.
